The paradigm of engineering is undergoing a major evolution throughout the world. The use of computers and the Internet has changed the way that we engineer and manufacture products. Among the recent trends in manufacturing are trends in which products are subject to a shorter product life, frequent design changes, small lot sizes, and small in-process inventory restrictions ("lean manufacturing"). The result of these trends is that today more than 90% of our products are manufactured in lots of less than 50 parts. These low lot quantities have eliminated many applications of dedicated production lines that were so effective in producing the inexpensive goods of the 1950 and 1960s.

The first step the nation employed to remain competitive with our international counterparts was the application of computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) to design and manufacture sophisticated products. Today, we routinely employ CAD to design products and flexible or programmable manufacturing systems to produce low- to medium-volume batch quantities. The Internet provides us with the connection to share design, marketing, and manufacturing information. We now look toward the advent of distributed design and manufacturing using agile networking as a means to produce products for the twenty-first century.

Employing numerical control (NC) and robotics in industry offers one potential solution to many manufacturing flexibility problems. This implementation, however, brings with it a variety of other problems. Robots and NC machines are designed to be flexible, self-contained, and capable of operating in both "stand-alone" and "integrated" manufacturing environs. Integrating this hardware into manageable systems has become a major focus of machine-tool makers and industry. Individual NC machines have also been made more versatile, more precise, more rigid and durable, and faster. More complex parts can be machined with higher accuracy and in less time. Timecompressed manufacturing technologies such as NC and rapid prototyping are being used more routinely to shorten product development cycles and to produce one-of-a-kind products. The benefit of all these new technologies cannot be achieved without the "communication networks" or an understanding of how these activities fit together. Today, it is not unusual for a design made thousands of miles away to be transferred to and realized in a remote site. Part programs and control instructions are downloaded from offices to machine controllers. Shop-floor operations can also be monitored either on-site or from afar. Manufacturing equipment has become part of the supply chain; capacity and availability are parameters used in planning and control of the entire chain. Further integration of the manufacturing component with design and business systems is also a key to our manufacturing success. These communication and control issues, coupled with a variety of sensing issues, are critical to the success of flexible automation in the United States.

This book focuses on the science, mathematics, and engineering of these new engineering methods. It is dedicated to making sure that the United States will remain the most efficient manufacturing nation in the world. The purpose of the book is to provide a comprehensive view of manufacturing, with a focus on design, automation, flexible automation, and the use of computers in manufacturing (CIM). Unlike other CIM books, this one attempts to provide a strong analytical science base and background in computer-aided manufacturing systems. The book is an excellent professional reference and also is an excellent text for CAM instruction.

The book is written for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses. Each chapter covers general background, fundamental principles, and applications. Unlike most other manufacturing books on the market, it includes both descriptive information and analytical models. Whenever possible, MATLAB is used in examples. We do not assume that readers have a significant background beyond basic undergraduate engineering courses. However, the book does cover a very wide range of technologies and methodologies. Readers will gain in-depth and practical knowledge in CAM technologies.

Getting dated, lots of errors

I've used this text for a reference and for teaching several courses. The main problem is that it is getting outdated--ANY text that has "computer" in the title gets outdated after a few years. Of course, there are fewer and fewer texts that address CAD/CAM in the marketplace as well, because they can't keep up with the technology. ON the other hand, manufacturing systems (particularly CNC) don't change quickly, so much of the legacy systems out there can be addressed with the text. The other issue is the number of figure and solution errors--there are quite a few. If you assign problems from the text, be prepared to check every single problem. I've alerted the publisher to this problem several times and have not seen any update or even an errata sheet.

In summary: Pretty good for an encompassing CAD/CAM text, a bit dated (especially the CAD section), and check for errors.

Don't waste your money! Not authentic tab. Half the songs listed on the back cover aren't even in the book. No solo's, Every song is in the "cowboy chord" open position. This book belongs in the garbage.

The inventiveness and delicacy with which Le Guin portrays her alien world are not only unusual and inspiring, they are fundamental to almost all decent science fiction that has been written since. In fact, reading Le Guin again may cause the eye to narrow somewhat disapprovingly at the younger generation: what new ground are they breaking that is not already explored here with greater skill and acumen? It cannot be said, however, that this is a rollicking good story. Le Guin takes a lot of time to explore her characters, the world of her creation, and the philosophical themes that arise.

If there were a canon of classic science fiction, The Left Hand of Darkness would be included without debate. Certainly, no science fiction bookshelf may be said to be complete without it. But the real question: is it fun to read? It is science fiction of an earlier time, a time that has not worn particularly well in the genre. The Left Hand of Darkness was a groundbreaking book in 1969, a time when, like the rest of the arts, science fiction was awakening to new dimensions in both society and literature. But the first excursions out of the pulp tradition are sometimes difficult to reread with much enjoyment. Rereading The Left Hand of Darkness, decades after its publication, one feels that those who chose it for the Hugo and Nebula awards were right to do so, for it truly does stand out as one of the great books of that era. It is immensely rich in timeless wisdom and insight.

The Left Hand of Darkness is science fiction for the thinking reader, and should be read attentively in order to properly savor the depth of insight and the subtleties of plot and character. Superb

This book is a classic so there is really nothing I can say that others have not already said, and better. It is science fiction that addresses the social consequences of contact between people from different planets rather than fixating on technology and the things that can go wrong. It is a great story with wonderful characters and descriptions of imagined worlds. It addresses the issues of sex and gender by imagining how a person from a world with two biological sexes would interact in a world where everyone is both sexes at once. The issue is not desire and the sex act, but rather how our social perceptions, interactions and expectations are shaped in rather profound ways by our ideas about gender. This is not the main point of the book but rather part of the rich social and philosophical landscape where the action takes place. I had been meaning to read this for years and am now a devoted Le Guin fan. I really think this might have made it into my top 20 favorite books.

No robots. No lasers. No problem!

Ursula K Le Guin. I had heard the name many times growing up. It was always spoken with respect by people who held my respect. And yet, for all of that I had not read her work until now. I wonder how different my life would have been if I had read her work sooner. I'll never know.

This book is, at its simplest and least descriptive, a thought experiment. What if there were a world where gender as we know it did not exist.

But that is not the half of it. It is not even close.

This book examines how nationalism can be wonderful and yet poisonous. It compares the societies of differing nation-states. It looks at humanity's role in nature. It stares unflinchingly at love in various forms and in the end, the reader has gone through a journey nearly as transformative as the one taken by our protagonist, Genly Ai.

My only true complaint stems from the idea that Genly's gender biases are so strong that he consistently labels the Gethenians as he despite having been briefed of their genderless status before beginning the assignment.

Still ignoring the pronoun confusion, this was an amazing book. It is thoughtful and thought provoking. It is wise and wonderful. And though a world as cold as Winter sounds like my own personal hell, I will revisit the characters again with pleasure.

Original, intelligent, sophisticated science fiction

This was a book I always meant to read, having seen only praise for the writing and plot. It did not disappoint.
What a fantastic concept! UKLG has created a wondrous, fully fleshed out alien world. Its inhabitants see themselves as normal and humans as the aberrations – stuck their entire lives in a single, pre-defined sex.
The story is told through the eyes of two protagonists: a human ambassador and a Gethenian politician. Both are intricate, well developed characters. The story is so well formulated that at the end, you view the human as the alien that he is, and the Gethenians as the normal ones.
This book was written several decades ago, and it shows: sentences are thoughtful and well phrased, and there is a lack of the grammatical and spelling errors which deplorably seem to be so rampant in modern works.
I would definitely recommend this book if you enjoy original, intelligent, sophisticated science fiction. I would not recommend it if you are simply looking for fast bang-bang action.

Great study tool

Compared to the other prep companies, these Kaplan books are very detailed. I used this as my main resource and then used the complete Princeton review book for follow up on each section. Lots of good review in the books and nothing you won't see. Although I did find some topics in the AAMC practice exams that were not covered in the psychology section so make sure you check the AAMC guidelines on their website for which topics they require you to know. I thought the online practice exams were pretty detailed oriented compared to the concept oriented questions found in the AAMC practice questions and exams. I scored 508s and 509s on the Kaplan exams but much higher on the AAMC practice exam, but both are still good resources I would recommend.

I really used the previous version to study for 4.5 months while working full time and in an internship part time. I read all of the books, except the CARS, multiple times and answered the questions and concept checks after each section. I then took the practice exams online along with the Princeton exams during my last 6 weeks of studying. I also used the AAMC question banks (also an invaluable resource) for all of the subjects and their practice exams during those last 6 weeks. I scored in the 99th percentile and couldn't have compiled all of the necessary topics so neatly on my own. I didn't take a prep course and this set was definitely worth the money. I also used the flashcard app that comes with the physical flash cards and those were also useful to master concepts and definitions.

Great Study Guide for the MCAT

I decided not to take the class because, well, I don't want to pay 2k just to have discipline in studying. Also, I learn better on my own. I'm halfway through the books and I would say they are very sufficient for self-studying. I am also using a brain boosting supplement called Neutropix – Support Brain Function, Memory, Attention Span, Concentration & Clarity when studying for the MCAT and it is really helping me. Practice drills/questions at end of each chapter gets me. The only thing I don't like about these books: Psychology--the context is not made as engaging as the other books. I love psychology but the book is so context packed, it lacks visual explanation and further elaboration (unlike the Khan Academy Lectures), which would be more effective. Physics--too much elaboration! More visual examples than verbose analogies would be preferred. CARS--Hate it and love it! I don't like how they spent every chapter focusing on finding your weakness instead of strengthening your weakness--that makes it more frustrating. I tried it their way first until chapter 3. That chapter, I didn't read any of their techniques, skipped to the practice drills, timed myself and... Out of the 2 passages, I got 1 wrong. I finished the CARS book after that without reading the techniques/tips, and would only get 1-2 questions wrong per drill. Annotate is important but practice is the best.

A definitive must for ID Students studying the History

Well, I youre thinking between this and Piles' History of ID then this is a much better book. Each style is explained with great details, and black and white photos and sketches are really helpful, and in the middle of the book is about a dozen of color photos of interiors.

I used this book a lot for my studies of the history of id.

If you're looking for a book full of photos of interiors and fancy words then just don't bother buying it since you wont find them in this book

Better for furniture/antiques dealers than designers

This book is a good encyclopedia of the history of interior design going back to ancient era- it catalogues the general overview for each period chronologically, explaining the function and materiality of a space or piece of furniture. The book is particularly nice for classifying particular styles of furniture and may be more suited to an antiques dealer or furniture dealer than a professional interior designer. The major problem i have with the book is that most if not all of the photographs are black and white, and it completely skips the modern era of design, pretty much ending with the turn of the 19th century. No mention of my favorites like Mies van der Rohe or Mr. Wright. This absence somehow makes this book seem incomplete.

Underwhelming and overpriced

The text of this volume is decent and well organized but in the area that most designers are interested in, visual examples, it is sorely lacking. A very minimal section of color photographs (which jump from Roman to the Renaissance. No sign of the Gothic)and a series of low contrast black and white ones are augmented with a series of uninspired drawings. All of this might still be helpful and useful were it not for the price. There are many volumes on furniture and decor that have come on the market recently which are superior in their content and priced more reasonably.

Numerical Programming with VBA

This is a good book. If one has taken a good numerical analysis in the past, it may seem a bit simple. However, I needed some understanding of the VBA methodology when doing numerical work on a PC. The book helps a great deal in this regard. The ebook works well for this. You can take the ebook and work on your computer in the VBA environment. It is good to not need to worry about carrying around a heavy library of paper.

There are some symbols that do not translate well in the ebook format. Complex formulas must be inserted as if they were figures. This is acceptable if aesthetics are not the goal. I wanted to know how to do some integrations and also other type of numerical work without purchasing an expensive software package and learning a new programming enviroment.

I have used numerical programming and have worked in the VBA environment. The book probably is about the best possible for this type of background.

The author seems to be well skilled in the theory of numerical analysis. The writing method and the appreciation of McCracken and Dorn suggest this is his background.

It is a good book for my purposes.

This book is too basic for any kind or real numerical methods course. Very few of the important techniques were covered. I wish there was a VBA equivalent to "Numerical Recipes in C".

GARBAGE

This books is useless. I bought this book because i needed some help programming some numerical integration functions, which this book has a chapter dedicated two. The book just focuses on the theory, without providing a single example of how to implement it in VBA, not one. It proves some good examples at the end of the chapter, but it doesn't even go about explaining how to write the code, or providing any tips. If you are buying this book to help you with the VBA, STAY AWAY!!!
