How else would one know?
By ideas equate
Educated young author and matching wife take a lengthy stay in a community without electricity. They participated, and stuck with it, long enough to bring us a story. Without their commitment to observe and to tell, how else would we know about the bright and awkward sides of human behavior within our society under those terms? We already could guess at the amount of toil even with immense amounts of inventiveness and experience inside the group. What one might not figure would be that they successfully set their sights on growth and expansion, and are well insured in their own way.

A frustrating and unsatisfying read

Are we better off -- socially and ecologically -- if we unplug ourselves and our lifestyles from electricity, gas, and other such utilities? This is Eric Brende's question, which he asks rather eloquently but never really answers.

For one thing, the "minimite" life seems like a nightmare for Eric's wife. She is the one hauling water from the pump to wash the laundry by hand. She is the one preparing, cooking, and keeping the food after a traumatic crash course in doing without refrigeration. She is, to wit, the hardest working person in the Brende household, and her plight portrays "minimite" life as neo-Stepford. Eric the Thoreau-like philosopher, often lost in his own thoughts, does not do nearly enough to acknowledge or explore the ramifications of this problem.

I was also disappointed in Brende's "conclusions," which failed to answer the central question of the book to my satisfaction. The story of his experiment draws to a close because his wife finds out she's allergic to horses, not because he's formulated a viable alternative to the plugged-in lifestyle he'll have to live the real world. So what was the point? Perhaps the Brendes' lives were changed forever, and maybe for the better. But I wasn't looking to read a memoir. I wanted hints and advice about where to begin transforming my own grid-dependent lifestyle.

By failing to ponder, explore, or present alternatives, Brende implies that the only viable solution is for all of us - for each of us - to move to farms of our own. Even if there were enough open acreage in America to sustain that kind of scenario (which there isn't), few people would adopt it. The vast majority of us - millions upon millions of us - need guidelines to help us change our lives where they exist right now.

Addressing the Geography of Nowhere

The landscape of most American communities continues to transform into bland uniformity, with a proliferation of strip malls and box stores around which hives of ticky-tacky suburban neighborhoods abound. The neighborhoods are strangely quiet during most weekdays, as their inhabitants are busy elsewhere, braving daily freeway commutes to their jobs, where they toil to pay the mortgages on the homes they seldom see. Even when they do have leisure time to spend at home, many leave again to congregate with strangers in shopping malls, movie theaters, and restaurants, as well as pursuing other forms of entertaining distraction. Many see this as progress and proclaim it is very good.

Yet there have always been those who have questioned whether or not the prevailing form of "civilization" is as good as prevailing opinion proclaims. These folks are usually written off by those who blithely accept the status quo, with pejoratives used to marginalize their qualms: "kooks," "culturally irrelevant," and "disestablishmentarian" are a few of the names bandied about. Yet the counter-cultural fringe doesn't go away, and their questions are resonating with more and more people who are noticing the landscape and don't like what they see.

The questions vary, but most boil down to this: when we accept the status quo are we accepting the destruction of what Russell Kirk called "the Permanent Things"?

Asking and doing are two different things, however. Eric Brende is a man who asks a lot of questions, but he and his wife Mary also decided to do something to find answers. Brende details their quest in the book Better Off: Flipping the Switch on Technology (HarperCollins, 2004).

I imagine that Eric Brende was one of those toddlers who drove his mother crazy asking, "Why?" about everything. He admits that by his adolescent years he had "cultural indigestion," though he had immersed himself in television, science fiction, and music as a boy, and later even held a job at McDonald's trying to earn money for a car. But with what would become typical of his cost-benefit style of analysis, he decided that a bicycle would make more sense. He developed a habit of questioning the benefits of technology, making a distinction between tools and automatic machines. He says,

Everyone tended to treat them alike, as neutral agents of human intention. But machines clearly were not neutral or inert objects. They were complex fuel-consuming entities with certain definite proclivities and needs. Besides often depriving their users of skills and physical exercise, they created new and artificial demands--for fuel, space, money, and time. These in turn crowded out other important human pursuits, like involvement in family and community, or even the process of thinking itself. The very act of accepting the machine was becoming automatic. As a graduate student at that bastion of progress, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Brende even had the temerity to write a paper defending the Luddites.

Those whose idea of getting back to nature is using their own espresso maker with organic coffee beans rather than patronizing Starbucks probably think that the Amish people represent the extreme end of technological repudiation. That would be false. Eric and Mary Brende actually discovered an Anabaptist community in rural Missouri that thinks the Amish are liberals who have run off the rails. This group lives without electricity and survives mostly by subsistence farming. In 1996, the Brendes finagled an invite to live with them for 18 months to test what had up till then just been Eric's theory: that scaling back technology would give more leisure time, not less.

In order to protect their identity and location, Brende calls the people he and his new wife lived with the "Minimites." They rented a cottage and some land from a Minimite family, the Millers, who became not only next-door neighbors, but friends who exemplified the proverb, "A friend in need is a friend in deed." The Brendes quickly found that if you don't depend on technology, then you had better learn to depend on others, as well as be willing to lend a hand yourself, when necessary.

Despite being cautiously enthralled with the idea of going off the grid and raising his own food, the Roman Catholic, Yale University graduate Brende had some tentative stereotypes about the bearded men and the women in their modest frocks and pleated caps. The Minimites also reserved opinion concerning the outsiders before relaxing their reserve. But after spending time with one another, mostly in work-related activities such as canning, hoeing, threshing, and barn raising, the walls lowered and the relationships warmed.

There was this phrase they kept repeating: "Many hands make work light." The statement was true, though hard to explain. Gradually, as you applied yourself to your task, the threads of friendship and conversation would grow and connect you to laborers around you. Then everything suddenly became inverted. You'd forget you were working and get caught up in the camaraderie, the sense of lightened effort. This surely must rank among the greatest of labor-saving secrets. Work folded into fun and disappeared. Friendship, conversation, exercise, fresh air, all melded together into a single act of mutual self-forgetting.

Brende tells of his surprise as the men who seemed so alike in their dour exteriors eventually distinguished themselves through their different personality quirks. Some had been part of similar communities all their lives, but many had, like the Brendes, come from the modern world and radically changed their lifestyles, often for the sake of their children. There was Edward, the ex-Vietnam veteran who liked to tell jokes then apologized for it; he and his wife would sometimes spar in front of others. There was Cornelius, the reclusive elderly schoolteacher who felt the Minimites were too materialistic and who lived like a hermit on the fringes of this fringe group. There was Harvey, Mr. Miller's oldest son, who could be both crude and jolly as he enjoyed his gargantuan meals, but who knew how to handle an axe and preferred it over a chain saw because "when I stop, it stops too."

In the cost-benefit scheme of things, Brende was constantly evaluating the success of his experiment. When they first arrived in the reclusive community, the Brendes were enchanted with many aspects of their new life, including the neat little home with its tidy yard and garden, the flush of success when the first vegetables began to grow, the physical benefits of hard work and the consonant ability to truly enjoy one's leisure. But weeds inevitably grow, and "weeds in particular must be hoed on time, whether you have the will to hoe or not." Lack of refrigeration and planning made the lack of variety in meals become onerous, for a time. It quickly became a burden to carry all their water from a spring, and attempts to construct a ram to bring water to the house only resulted in running from some cows, but no running water. And working in extreme heat and extreme cold could be downright uncomfortable.

Less is usually more is the conclusion Brende draws. After passing out from heatstroke at a threshing party, at first he wondered if his entire premise about technology had been a fantasy. "[The threshing] appeared to be a form of naked physical toil that only a glutton for punishment would willingly engage in. Was there a need for more machinery here?" But after he realized that the other workers had survived the first threshing of the season unscathed, he remembered that he had just returned from a trip with his wife in an air-conditioned car where they had been in air-conditioned buildings. His body was not yet acclimatized to the heat, thanks to technology.

Brende also notes that reducing their dependence on technology had the benefit of heightening their sensory perceptions as well as their enjoyment of everyday activities. When their garden finally began producing and Mary finally began consulting cookbooks and learning the craft of cooking--"The domestic dungeon burst its bonds, and Mary the artiste stepped forth"--they discovered the joy of tasting real, fresh food. Long evenings were spent reading, as well as just listening to the ebb and flow of the sounds outside, or watching fireflies cavort about the ceiling. Kerosene lamps provided illumination at night without eliminating the natural light from the stars (though Minimites kept flashlights for emergencies). Life was lived according to the natural cycles of daylight and nighttime, and while work was physically demanding, it was limited by these natural boundaries. The down-side was occasional moodiness induced by long winter days without much light, but the inevitable return of spring was that much sweeter.

Many have heard of the Gilbreth family in the story Cheaper by the Dozen. The famous family with 12 children was portrayed first in a book, then some 1950s movies (then in a couple of recent and forgettable remakes of the original movies). In the real-life clan, the parents were both "efficiency experts," applying their time-saving methods to their large brood, often with amusing results, such as when the children regaled their new principal with an explanation of how their father taught them to bathe. Efficiency in the early twentieth-century was big business, and Eric Brende notes the contributions of Frederick Taylor who was known as the father of "scientific management."

Wielding a stopwatch, he would measure the time it took a worker to perform a given task, such as shoveling dirt. Then he would analyze the task, breaking it down into segments, eliminating any unnecessary motions and replacing them with more efficient ones. The task was now standardized. Using Taylor's findings, a manager could instruct an employee how to shovel dirt in one perfect, unvarying pattern, as if he were a robot, and reprimand him if he deviated to the slightest degree. Taylorism thence became one of the most slavish forms of technological servility, parodied by Charlie Chaplin in the movie Modern Times.

Yet what seems like a good idea may have unintended consequences, Brende believes. More stuff requires more maintenance, and more time working to keep up with the Joneses who have more stuff than you. Comparing the height of threshing season (lasting two to four weeks), when the full day's workload resulted in just over nine hours of actual labor, to the year-round burden of a typical partner in a New York law firm who works 60-80 billable hours, Brende decided that his yoke was easy and his burden light, especially when he considered the long breaks in the off season.

While criticizing modern notions of efficiency, however, Brende noticed that one kind of division of labor made a lot of sense, though to say so offends modern notions of egalitarianism: dividing the work of men and women. From the start, the Brendes fell into the pattern of Eric doing the heavy outside chores and Mary taking care of the house, with some overlap when it came to gardening, canning, and occasionally cooking, though Mary had been employed in Boston before their radical move from the city. The book tells about the home birth of the Brende's baby Hans; the midwife reluctantly accepted the hundred dollars they offered her. They took a weekend trip to have the baby baptized and to visit friends, and Eric decided to attend a college lecture about the social relations of the Amish. It turned out to be a feminist diatribe against their "patriarchal" system, critical of the delineation of men's and women's tasks. Brende, after living with "Amish" people for so long, couldn't sit still for that. While he didn't defend patriarchy, he did point out that "...never was there a society in which female, or womanly, values so dominated? Nurturing the land and the crops, deferring to the wishes of others, not having to get one�s own way? And because they live on farms, women make an important economic contribution to the home, well recognized by the community."

The occasional foray back into the industrial world didn't keep the Brendes from being tempted to remain in the Minimite community. But they eventually decided that they had learned what they set out to discover: how much or how little technology was really necessary for "human comfort and leisure," and they wanted to see how that could be worked out in the outside world. They found that life without technology is not the romantic utopia that some would like to imagine--it's hard work. They also found that such a life is impossible without community, and not many have the same ideals. Like a true idealist, though, Brende says, "What we saw in it can be transported; principles are lightweight and easily carried about." The Brendes carried them to an older neighborhood in Saint Louis where they now live with their children.

It was an Ok read.

Not what I expected from Sa'id. I see his writing style is versatile. The character and story was well developed and the scenes were vivid and funny. I did get a glimpse of that murder pen game of his in the killing scenes. This book showed that he can get rachet and raunchy with the best of them. I like the different messages throughout the story. It displayed the fu**very that happens on a regular. Sa'id is funny as sh*t!!! I swear for the longest I have always thought it was something wrong with a grown man who didn't have a mustache and could grow one. I be like ugh where your stache at???? I think in the case of Breeze he was having a hard time transitioning and was not aware that the biggest crooks wear white collars. He'll learn. I was glad Tosha saw the error of her ways and decided to do something different. What was Vida's motivation? Those characters were just nasty period, but it's real life. I gave it ⭐⭐⭐⭐because of the awareness and messages thought out.

Enjoyable Story
By The Fewest Words
This was a good read but not quite what I'm used to from this author. His sarcastic bite was missing, but his wit was there nonetheless. I have to say this author can write darn near anything and have as lesson for you to learn. The characters in this tale were some sexually ignorant and irresponsible people. It makes you shudder to know that there are actually real folks out there who have this same mindset. The kill scenes in this were a little tamer than I'm used to from Mr. Salaam but they were still great scenes. I can't wait for part 2 because that ending was a complete surprise and I adore surprise endings. Great work Sa'id Salaam.

Transformative!

I consider myself a pretty good home cook. However, my idea of a good meal was an elaborate main course with the vegetable dish as an after thought. My family of four would eat the green beans or salad I served because they had to and because they knew it was good for them, but it wasn’t a highlight of our meal. We had a pretty limited repertoire of vegetables that I served and my family would eat.

Laura Russell’s Brassicas book has completely transformed the way I cook and my family eats. Not only do we have about ten new vegetables that we now eat on a regular basis (kohlrabi, mizuna, tatsoi, turnips, collard greens, etc), but the brassica dish is the highlight of the meal. More often than not, our meals include a delicious brassica recipe from Laura Russell’s book, served along a simple piece of fish, steak, or chicken. Because the vegetables are so delicious, we are eating a lot more of them. I would estimate that we eat twice as many servings of vegetables/day than before we discovered this book.

Some of my family’s favorite recipes include the Kale chips, the Kale and Sweet Potato Sauté, Tatsoi and Blueberry Salad, Grilled Baby Bok Choy with Miso Butter, and the Boke Bowl Cauliflower and Brussels Sprout Salad with Thai Vinaigrette. (It is hard to just pick out a few recipes – I love them all so far).

I also enjoy the way the book is written. Laura Russell does a great job of pointing out what can be prepared ahead, what substitutions can be made, and what can be served with the dish. A lot of the recipes can be partially prepared ahead of time and then the last steps can be done quickly right before serving. I’ve found this helpful because I’m often driving my kids from activities right before dinner.

Best Cookbook for Vegetables!

This is an excellent cookbook. Originally I found this book in my local library and tried some of the recipes. After trying a few of the recipes I was hooked and purchased a copy to own. The book is well written and the photographs are beautiful. The recipes are simple and straight forward. The most wonderful thing about this book is that it has allowed me to try vegetables that before now I would never have even considered preparing at home. I have prepared over half of the recipes since my initial purchase and intend to cook them all. I love this book and have gifted copies to friends and family.

We bought this book a little over a month ago because we are trying to eat a better variety of vegetables.
If this cookbook doesn't get you eating something green at least twice a day, nothing will!
I had 7 servings of veggies + fruits today! Three were luscious leafy greens (kale, spinach, & kale again!), which I might have eaten once or twice a week in the past.

My husband (hates new things!) and may be more difficult to get to try new flavors than my kids!
Everyone has eaten every recipe I've cooked from this book & has actually started asking if something new came "from Laura'"? The directions for cooking new veggies are explicit. It's possible to jump in at any chapter (even if you've never bought some of these before!) and actually succeed the first time! I've even gotten adventurous enough to add a TX twist to some of our new favorites!

Thus far we enjoyed:
Kale & broccoli more than ever before - every recipe has been great &
I know Laura's cooking techniques have improved the presentation of these old favorites!
Roasting & sauté instructions got me out of the "steam it" rut I fell into - esp. w/ broccoli

Kale sauté w/ sweet potatoes - delicious
Kale veggie wraps
Lemon broccoli 'chop' salad w/ chickpeas!
Broccoli frittata - breakfast heaven- also awesome w/ asparagus
Collard greens w/ fried eggs

And for the first time I've bought & made:
***Winey mushrooms w/ broccolini
***Cauliflower - roasted, "riced" & au gratin
***grilled Baby Bok Choy w/ miso-butter ( I added mini bell peppers & cashews )

I'm working up my bravery to buy other greens, turnips, & Brussels sprouts for the first time in my life (!)

An excellent resource

This is an excellent book for non-quant jockeys who want to brush up on their mathematical skills for upper-level or graduate-level econ courses. The best strength of the book is its organization. After a chapter on introduction and discussion of a mathematical technique or theory, a chapter on the technique's application is presented. This is an excellent way to not only reinforce the material but demonstrate its applications and relavence to economics.

However, several caveats should be noted:

First, I believe that the ideal reader should already have some exposure to calculus. For instance, Dowling discusses the fundamentals of differentiation in about 26 pages, which is far too little if one is learning calculus from scratch. If the reader already has some exposure to calculus (as I did), then Dowling's chapters on differentiation and integration could be used as review.

Second, the learning curve really steepens in the latter chapters when Dowling discusses differential equations as he appears to sacrifice detailed explanations for brevity.

Lastly, I think the reader would be best served to use this book as a resource and not just as the main text. Mathematical Economics is a very broad and challenging subject, and as good as this book is, it only scratches the surface of a complex topic. I would also recommend "Fundamental Methods of Mathematical Economics" by Alpha Chiang.

I teach math for economists to undergraduates and Ph.D. and Masters students. I and my students agree, this book is great. It isn't a math textbook -- you will still need a good one of those (I am currently recommending Michael Klein's book for undergrads and the text by Simon and Blume for grad students.) But the book is more than a list of problems. The problems are written and organized to build up your understanding of the math. I like this book much better than most of the other Schaum's outline books; it doesn't drown you in detail, but helps you move through the structure of the math.

Great book

This helps beginning PhD econ students (and other PhD students taking econ PhD core courses) to get to the important points fast. With a lot of exercises, it also drives the point home quick.
If you are one like me who gets frustrated with a lot of blah blah from textbooks like Simon and Blume, as well as the terse/succinct textbook like Varian's Microeconomics analysis, this is a great buy. This book is direct to the point, and very student friendly.

About the Author
Dr. Bin Wu received his PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering, at the University of Toronto in 1993. He holds 5 US patents in high-power converters and ac drives. Dr Wu has published 90 papers in power electronics and ac drives, received a total research funding of $2.8 milion dollars from the government and private sector, and has received various awards at national, provincial and institutional levels, including the Gold Metal of the Governor General of Canada, NSERC Synergy Award for Innovation, Premier Research Excellence Award, Ryerson Sarwan Sahota Distinguished Scholar Award and Ryerson Research Chair Award. Dr. Wu has also developed a number of power electronics based products for various companies, including Rockwell Automation (Allen- Bradley), Honeywell Aerospace, Lumacell Inc, Allanson International Inc and Industrial Lighting & Electric. He has produced over 70 technical reports for the above-mentioned companies. He was also the founder of LEDAR (Laboratory for Electric Drive Research and Applications) - the best of its kind in Canadian Universities.

Every so often a cookbook comes along that wishes it were a television show. Brown's latest effort actually is a television show, or rather, a marathon of all 80 episodes from the first six seasons of his Food Network hit. Egotistical yet thrifty, Brown interviews himself in the introduction, describing this work as four hundred pages of liner notes. And that is sadly accurate. For all its girth, there are merely 140 recipes, ranging from chocolate syrup to butternut dumplings with brown butter and sage. That these entries appear sequentially exemplifies the book's biggest problem; it is organized by TV episode number, causing readers to repeatedly visit the index to make sure they're not missing anything. The roast turkey is toward the beginning of the book, for example, but the turkey salad is hiding out somewhere in the middle. Recipes that never made it into the show! are promised, but good luck identifying them, and is that really a bonus? Accompanying each meal is a chart labeled, Knowledge Concentrate. These contain the fun, quasi-scientific facts that are the author's bread and butter (The higher the egg-to-dairy ratio, the firmer the custard). The remainder of the pages are cluttered with photo strips, sketches and squiggly lines, lest you get bored and turn on the tube. (Oct.)

Alton Brown is the writer, director, and host of the Food Network show Good Eats, which won a 2007 Peabody Award, and is the expert commentator on Iron Chef America. Good Eats for your countertop - a multi-use tool.

Finally! No more having to dig through the search engine of the food network website or dreading that I wrote the wrong measurement or ingredient while watching the show and frantically trying to copy all the juicy "tidbits"! No more looking at the DvD collection and sighing at the price, knowing I could never afford it! It's Good Eats, concise, compact and affordable.

This volume contains the first 6 seasons and covers all 80 shows, covering: steak, spuds, eggs, baking, grilling, jams, frying, apples, mushrooms, and many more Good Eats.

All of the tidbits are here and I dare say if not all, most of them, including updates on some of the tips and hints since the episodes were made (such as the recent teflon scare and how teflon isn't bad below 550F). The recipes from each episode are listed with procedures, diagrams, pictures and notations. It takes the fear away from the complexity of cooking and gives you fun history tips that you can pass on during dinner chat or use in a friendly game of trivial pursuit. Having seen other works of Alton's and considering him the best of the best for telling you how, when and why with science to back it up, I rate this the #1 must have.

BTW, it's printed in a durable binder and the dustjacket folds out into a pulp-fiction type poster (cover art) that I'm seriously considering hanging in the game room due to its fun nature.

GOOD EATS, INDEED! Buyer, beware of recipe 'replacements' in newer editions.

Great book, but I bought it for a specific recipe that was included in the first printing," A Chuck for Chuck." Instead, I found an explanation that too many people didn't like the recipe. Consequently, the recipe as shown on the episode was replaced with a generic, lackluster pot roast recipe I can find on any search engine.

My beef (no pun intended) is this: If you are going to claim it is the cookbook for specific episodes' then why replace the recipes? Certainly, the show's producers and book's editors received feedback about the Chuck for Chuck Pot Roast recipe (with raisins and olives) long before the first edition went to press. Why not include the original Chuck for Chuck Pot Roast recipe so that the book matches the show and then offer an alternate for those folks who don't like the recipe provided on the show?

I quickly checked other recipes that I have enjoyed in this cookbook and there are no other changes noted. It appears that the Food Network website maintains the original recipes used in each episode where I was able to find the original Chuck for Chuck recipe. I would love to give this book 5 stars -- it's that good. However, if you're like me -- pressed for time, energy, etc., the last thing you want to do is go hunting on the internet for a recipe that was included in a previous version.

What I can say about Alton Brown's recipes is that they always work. I have introduced many friends to his books and across the board, from absolute newbie to weekend chef, the resounding feedback is that the recipes always come out perfectly. And that is definitely due to Alton Brown's culinary expertise and obvious desire to share his knowledge with his readers and viewers.

A book for the GENIUS GEEK COOK in you!

Purchased for my hubby. He does less cooking but loves the gadgets/science end of it. He, in fact, is called in quite often to cook/drain the pasta noodles and make rice (except risotto, my specialty ;) otherwise pasta/rice are harder than they sound to get just right. Anyway, this is a great Alton Brown cookbook. Who doesn't love Alton? He is engaging and makes cooking (not being a culinary expert; though he most def. is!) accessible and spins a story around each dish, ingredient and pot/pan or gadget. His down to earth manner married to expertise is just right for my Engineer spouse. I thought he should have a more "Guy" cookbook (instead of my Macaroons, Afternoon Tea,rec Ina Garten, Martha Stewart.) I love it too. I also highly recommend Alton Brown's "Gear: For Your Kitchen". Finally, a primer for outfitting my kitchen. I have many tools/gadgets/small electrics, all of the usual accoutrements - but still feel like I am missing something, sometimes at least. Now I can cover the checklist. Also...move into new territory, and play with new toys! GREAT resources (both books.) Alton is a sly, unassuming, if intense - genius. You are too so get this book!

Gr 9 Up-In Half Wild (Viking, 2015), the previous volume of this trilogy, Annalise, the former romantic partner of protagonist Nathan, killed his father, Marcus. Now Nathan is obsessed with tracking down Annalise, though he's not exactly sure what he'll do when he finds her. Nathan and his new lover, Gabriel, are part of the Alliance, whose purpose is to eliminate the evil Council of White Witches. As always, Nathan is moody and reticent, even more so since the death of his father. While he's been developing the magical powers he inherited from Marcus, he has also been killing groups of the Council's Hunters as he comes across them. His murderous spree worries Gabriel and Alliance leaders, and he has to work hard to repress the evil part of him. The climax of the story, in which Nathan leads Alliance fighters as they invade the Council's headquarters, is violent and bloody but not unexpectedly so. The result of the battle and the story's denouement are unexpected, and the conclusion of the tale is emotionally wrenching but fitting. Those who have read the first two installments of the trilogy will read the enthralling finale eagerly and should, ultimately, be satisfied. Sally Green lives in north-west England. She has had various jobs and even a profession but in 2010 she discovered a love of writing and now just can’t stop. She used to keep chickens, makes decent jam, doesn't mind ironing, loves to walk in Wales even when it's raining, and will probably never jog again. She really ought to drink less coffee. Half Bad is her first novel.

Super BAD

If you liked book one and two, do yourself a favor and don't read this.

It goes from good to bad to worse in the last parts and it's such a disappointment.
The author leads you think that this book would be different to all the others books with LGBT+ main characters.
It's not.
To think I was excited to read this. I ended up hating it.

I'm all for different endings that aren't anything like you thought would happen. but this book somehow took the twist ending and made it feel extremely sad and I personally felt let down. I wasn't sure if I loved or hated it because I didn't really see the characters personality ever doing something like this. But to each their own I guess

Seriously. This book is not going to leave you, ever.
While it's not the book I've ever read, it did something to my heart like no other book. Maybe it was the timing, and me being older now...but I think it's mostly how real and true this book is.
