Uplifting devotional for being beautiful from the inside out
By Christina Lockstein
Experience the Ultimate Makeover by Sharon Jaynes is a fantastic devotional for women. It's written in the tone of a spa or makeover treatment with cute chapter headings, but the text is rock solid faith. Jaynes is encouraging women to become new from the inside out through Christ. Dumping the lies we believe about ourselves, getting rid of baggage God has already forgiven, and trusting Him with our future is some of her advice. The chapter that resonated most strongly with me was about the labels that we put on ourselves: fat, old, ugly, etc, etc. And the labels that God has put on us: salt of the earth, light of the world, child of God, co-heir with Jesus, plus two more pages of beautiful names all with Scripture references. When I find myself thinking negatively about myself, I repeat some of the names Jaynes gives, and it reminds me of who God says I am. And if God says I am those things, who am I (or who is anyone else) to argue? Each chapter has many Bible verses to support Jayne's advice, and the main theme of the book is: 2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! Bless yourself and a friend with this book!

Extreme makeover!
By Amazon Customer
"What's wrong with me?"
"Why can't I have the peace I see in other Christians?"

I opened this book and these questions popped out off the page at me. I know I've been looking for a few more light reads lately, but this book seemed to side swipe me when I opened it.

Sharon's beginning story is like my own. I understand her desire to want to be beautiful and the feelings of inferiority growing up. Most woman (if not all) want to be beautiful on some level, but we don't necessarily know what that means. How do we become beautiful on the inside when so many issues eating us up on the inside? Sharon points out in the very first chapter that even though we become Christians and our spiritual make over is complete, it doesn't mean that soul is there. "Inner beauty is the result of God's transforming power in the heart of a willing soul. He doesn't simply cover up our flaws; He miraculously starts from scratch and makes us new."

I love this because I've been struggling with this even now. I think sometimes we as Christians think we should have it together and we fight God... we aren't willing to let the change happen. I've been praying this week "Lord change me." instead of "Lord help me." Because the truth is if I ask for his help, it's like I have a part in it, and I don't. I want to be his vessel for His work instead of my work. (and that's hard to admit when I think I should know better!!)

Each chapter in Experience the Ultimate Makeover- Discovering God's Transforming Power by Sharon Jaynes touches, informs, and brings to light issues that we want to ignore.

Isn't starting at the beginning a great place to understand why we need a makeover? I've heard before but never really understood about the parts that we're made up of. Sharon explains this so well I finally got it! We're made up of three parts - body, soul & spirit. Sharon uses the example of an apple and what it would be like to bite into a beautiful apple, only to taste rotten mush inside. While I've understood the inside and out, I've never really placed it together with being my tent - my body, my soul - the fruit, and the seeds being the spirit. The seed inside determines the fruit... oh how that makes so much more sense to me now!

Which brings me to a quote that captured my attention:

"The basis for Eve's temptation, and for ours as well, is the lie that God is somehow holding out on us."

Ouch! Do I think that? I know I can say all I want that I believe God's word as truth, but until I apply it to my soul it is meaningless. Do I think he's holding out on me? I may say no, but my actions say something else.

The Ultimate Make over is a beautiful journey into what we need to be and how we can get there. It's reaffirming and refreshing like a pedicure.. it helps remove the old crusties from being in the cold all winter and refreshes us to let us feel whole again.

I love that Sharon uses so much of God's Word and pushes it on us... helping us to heal and rely on it. I love that she uses the metaphorical spa... it really hits home with me (being the girly girl that I am.)

For me, chapter Seven was a hard one: Renewing Mind - Changing the Way We Think. She says it well when she says that "Every spiritual battle is won or lost at the threshold of the mind..."

Sharon does a really good analogy of how satan attacks us and how we need to recognize his lies, reject them (not letting them in in the first place), and how to replace those lies with the real truth. These are things I know, but I sure don't do well. I am encouraged after reading this to work harder at this area in my life and to be successful at it.

Some of the examples of the lies are:

* satan says God couldn't love me.
* God Says: "How great is the love the father lavishes on us, that we should be called children of God!" 1 John 3:1

* satan says I'm damaged goods.
* God says "Do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price." 1 Cor. 6:19-20

* satan says I'll never get through this.
* God says "Everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victor that has overcome the world, even our faith" 1 John 5:4-5

Oh friends, I can't tell you how much these verse help reaffirm what God really has done for us!

I've barely skimmed the surface of this book but I hope it gives you an idea of how much this book will encourage you. If you really are looking for a refreshing look at your spiritual walk and want the Ultimate Makeover I think you'll glean a lot from this book. This would be an excellent group study book!

I will add my most favorite thing about this book: Other than the fact that this is a fantastic scripture based book, the very end is best! Why? Sharon gives her make-up kit! It is the coolest thing I've seen and I may at some point do a WFW on it because it's extremely inspirational! I don't want to give the spoiler to it, but think of it like the armor of God, but girly girl style!

Get this book. It will enrich your life and enrich your walk with Christ. This book is a very easy read. I found it hard to put down. It is well thought out and well written. Be sure to answer the questions in the back after every chapter. Otherwise you won't get as much out of the book.

From the Inside Flap
In All the Things You Are, award-winning author David Evanier offers an intimate and unvarnished portrait of one of the most beloved singers of all time. Among America's greatest entertainers, from Garland to Sinatra, Tony Bennett alone is still here and at the top of his game. He has led an amazing life. At age ten, he stood beside Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia at the dedication of New York City's Triboro Bridge and, leading the throng of people across it, sang "Marching Along Together." He fought in World War II and helped liberate a Nazi concentration camp. He was discovered by Pearl Bailey and Bob Hope. In the 1960s, he marched alongside Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma, Alabama, and several of his paintings are in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. And, of course, he sings, too.

Evanier probes deeply into the life and career of a genuine living legend. Drawing upon interviews with scores of Tony's friends, family members, and fellow musicians, as well as experts on the last fifty years of music, he vividly captures the musical history of an era. He brings deep insight into a man who has stayed perennially young because of his devotion to his art and to humanity. Friends speak affectionately of how Tony would rebuke them when they said that Tony was a better singer than his idol, Frank Sinatra. One friend tells how the singer's brief unannounced appearances at small music clubs lifted the hearts of mourning New Yorkers after 9/11. Another describes Tony's repeated visits to listen to and sing with his former music teacher during the last year of the teacher's life.

Evanier recounts Tony's impoverished yet happy childhood in Depression-era Astoria, Queens, and re-creates the heady early years of his career, as he produced one great hit record after another. He examines Tony's bleakest years, during the 1970s, when the singer struggled with addiction, a difficult second marriage, and evaporating interest in the Great American Songbook he loved to sing. Evanier also reveals the pivotal role Tony's children played in helping him relaunch his career by becoming popular music's ambassador to new generations of listeners. Today he is a musical statesman, America's troubadour, style model, mentor, and the unmatched interpreter of the greatest American composers of popular music, from Gershwin to Berlin to Rodgers and Hart and Cole Porter.

All the Things You Are is a story that includes some of the foremost personalities of the past sixty years: Judy Garland, Fred Astaire, Frank Sinatra, Cary Grant, Duke Ellington, Bob Hope, Ray Charles, Count Basie, Jimmy Durante, Billie Holiday, Stevie Wonder, Diana Krall, k.d. lang, and many more.

Complete with candid assessments of Tony Bennett's life and career by the likes of legendary radio personality Jonathan Schwartz and the Wall Street Journal's Terry Teachout, All the Things You Are is a masterful, groundbreaking biography and must reading for anyone who has heard that voice and fallen in love with the artist behind it.

From the Back Cover
The first complete biography of singing legend Tony Bennett

"David Evanier's All the Things You Are is a work of profound empathy and musical understanding. Tony Bennett lives in these pages as a matchlessly joyous singer whose brilliance refracts from a deep and subtle soul."
—James Kaplan, author of Frank: The Voice

"Much as Tony Bennett's music is appreciated, so will be this insightful book about the man behind the music."
—Gay Talese

"Like the American songbook, Tony Bennett is indestructible. He has become the greatest champion of classic songs and thanks to his interpretation of them, they will go on and on. All the Things You Are is a stylishly written book that mirrors its subject. David Evanier has great knowledge and depth of understanding of Tony Bennett and his legacy. This is a significant work of art."
—Michael Feinstein

"The great thing about David Evanier's biography—beyond its reliable research, nuanced evaluations, and stylistic eloquence—is that by looking closer at a great artist than the artist might have wished, it uncovers a man even more worthy of our admiration than we knew: a valiant defender of civil rights as well as the classic American songbook and the singer's right to enhance it by his own light."
—Gary Giddins, author of Bing Crosby: A Pocketful of Dreams and Warning Shadows

For my money, I'd still choose Bennett's autobiography "The Good Life" over this one...
By Agnes Andrea
I've read two books about Tony Bennett: "The Good Life" (his 1998
autobiography written with critic/journalist Will Friedwald); and "All
The Things You Are" (the 2011 biography by author David Evanier).

"The Good Life" is a warm, passionate life story brimming with
anecdotes only the man himself could tell (about his growing up in an
Italian-American neighborhood, his WWII experience, his acquaintance
and friendship with some of the greatest artists in the showbiz for
the last 60 years or so). You can feel in every page Bennett's
positive, enthusiastic attitude towards life, his uncompromising love
for good music and good songs. Still, being a very private person, and
not so keen on dishing the dirt about himself (or about others: you
won't catch him talking badly about anyone, not even those who were an
obstacle to his career) in his memoir Bennett has the tendency to pass
by very quickly his personal (marital) problems and his professional
troubles: the 1976-1985 decade, possibly his darkest moment, is
hastily dealt with in about ten pages.

You might expect David Evanier's book ("All The Things You Are") to
provide more insight precisely about those aspects overlooked by
Bennett. And it does, just not as much as you'd expect.
One of Evanier's main sources is Derek Boulton, Bennett's manager
between 1970 and 1974. So you get lots of detail about those years, a
brief strech actually. Evanier also covers, of course, the last 13 or
so years since Bennett's memoir was published; and you get interesting
infos about how Bennett and his pianist of a lifetime, Ralph Sharon,
parted ways in 2002.
There are all new interviews, but Evanier seems to draw consistently from
Bennett's memoir itself, essentially following that blueprint, and
from other archive interviews.

As stated by other reviewers, in Evanier's book there are a few
repetitions, inaccuracies and misspelling (see also the excellent
reader's review by Bismaquer on Amazon UK) which suggest the book
could have used a better editing/revision.
The recording of the Rodgers&Hart songbook took place in 1973, not
1974; likewise, the famous Alice Tully Hall concerts were in 1973, not
1974, and 2nd guitarist on those occasions was not Bucky Pizzarelli,
who by then had left the Barnes/Braff group, but Wayne Wright.
Orchestrator Jorge Calandrelli occasionally becomes "Calendrelli"; in
one point the song "Where do you go from love" becomes "Where do you
go for love"... giving it an altogether... well... "different"
meaning... And so on.
One thing that doesn't seem very professional to me is throughout the
book the author refers to Bennett's ex-wives (Patricia and Sandra)
using the nicknames given them by some of Bennett's closest associates
("Sandy One" and "Sandy Two"). That's okay, of course, if you're
quoting somebody's words; but it's rather odd to see a biographer
using nicknames directly himself, and out of quotation. By the way,
while the author writes at lenght about Bennett's ex-wives, neither
seems to have a say or to have been contacted for their version.

All considered, if Evanier proves anything, is that Bennett's memoir
was a fair and honest account of his own life; so if I was to choose
only one book about Bennett I'd pick his autobiography "The Good
Life": a satisfying, informative overview of Bennett's life, written
by the person who knows the matter best - the old man himself.

This is a GREAT book about Tony Bennett by David Evanier
By Nick Riggio
Nicholas J. Riggio says:

I have been a lifelong Tony Bennett fan and friend since 1950. I have read the book by David Evanier and found it to be fascinating, factual, and well written. I sent David many old newspaper clippings from the 1950's. They were reviews of Tony's nightclub performances. I marveled how David introduced them into the story. I found the descriptions of so many great Bennett albums refreshing and honest! It is true that Tony Bennett has recorded many great songs and albums that received little to no air time by DJs on the radio. David brings them back to life with great detail.

This is a book that is hard to put down once you start reading it. It just flows from page to page and is very informative.

All The Things You Are: The Life of Tony Bennett is a must read! I want to thank David Evanier for writing a great book about my favorite singer and a great man Mr. Tony Bennett!

As the late , great Jimmy Roselli said" Tony has one of the warmest voices ever" and now there is a book that celebrates Tony's wonderful career with great skill, pride and love.

Great Book - One of it's kind
By Michael J. Fiorito
All The Things You Are is without a doubt the best book ever written on Tony Bennett. I've waited a long time for a book like this to come into print.

There's the book Bennett co-wrote with Will Friedwald. The Good Life: The Autobiography Of Tony Bennett, but it doesn't really say anything - it mainly reminds us that Bennett is a really nice guy. We already knew that.

What immediately comes across in Evanier's book is his fascination and affection for Italian-American crooners. You can tell that Evanier not only writes about the subject of crooners, but is also a huge fan. It's clear that no one put Evanier up to the task of writing this book. He had to write it. His enthusiasm and his easy to read writing style makes All The Things You Are a delectable treat. I think I read it in two days. It was so enjoyable I almost wanted to eat it afterwards.

As in his other books Evanier gets to the heart of Bennett. We see how Bennett surrounded himself with great musicians and insisted on recording quality material. Evanier writes that Bennett's musical style was informed first under the directorship of the innovative jazz guitarist, Chuck Wayne and then later under the pianist Ralph Sharon. Moving away from the crooner pop songs that made him famous, Bennett's used his success to evolve into one of the all-time great jazz singers.

I was surprised to learn about his failed marriages, struggles with addiction, and his (what?) volcanic temper. But at least we now know that Bennett is human. I was also surprised to learn that he'd often lash out against Ralph Sharon after concerts, wrongly accusing him of ruining performances. Of course, many of Bennett's most famous recordings have been made great by Sharon's tasteful and concise piano phrasing and overall musical vision.

This book will make you want to listen to Bennett's oeuvre: his work with Bill Evans, Count Basie, and countless other jazz legends. Not to mention that he's still recording with relevant artists.

But don't believe me; pick up the book and read it if you love the crooners as I do.

Good so far but hopefully will get better
By Angela
I like this series so far but I have to say that Everly and her double standards & indecision are getting old real fast! It's ok for her to do whatever she wants but then she tries to hold Talon to high standards?!?! Then she tries to play the innocent one minute, the whore the next, then the girl (cause she sure does not act like a woman!) who is in love, etc... It seems like the author has tried to make her into 5-6 different people at the same time-or she is just completely insane. Too much bouncing back & forth with her personality for me. Over all, this seems to be a good series except for the cliff hangers at the end of every book. If I wasn't able to read them all together like I've been doing & get them thru Kindle Unlimited, I probably would have given up after book 1 or 2. Just not my style but that doesn't mean it's bad-just not what I like to read.

Hardcore MC with a twist, love love love it!
By dawn sandstrom
This series had me hooked from the beginning. Talon really cares about Everly but is torn between her and how to handle his MC. Watching him evolve and deal with his emotions has been awesome to see. Layne needs to put aside his feelings toward Talon so the MC can run smoothly and let his true feelings for Everly come to the fore front. I would love to see the three of them together and go forward toward happiness they all deserve because of all they have been through. Can't wait for the next installment. I'm hooked!!!

Things are heating up
By K.Leggiero
Twisted Mayhem definitely is twisted.

Talon's past comes back to haunt him in the form of his step-father, who turns out to be Detective John. Talon learns that John has told Everly he is Talons father. Talon and Everly make a promise of no more secrets but we all know that Talon is still keeping one, Jade. However, Everly is also keeping a secret from Talon, her unresolved feeling for Layne. The clubhouse is thrown into more chaos with the attack on Austin and the aftermath once revenge is extracted.

A Literary Sampler
By John Winston
Everyday Isn’t Perfect is just a good, well-written book to read your life into balance, covering both diet and exercise in a common sense, practical way. K.L. Register’s little tome is part prose and part poetry with sections of self-help and a taste of memoir, a literary sampler if you will. And … it’s funny, too. I thought I was the only one that didn’t like mac and cheese.

Here’s a sample of the goods: “You shouldn't have to beg a person to be a part of your life. There are too many people searching for someone like you,” “genuine friends have emotional hearts that will always and forever be invisibly tied together,” and my favorite, “You were not put on Earth to be perfect; you were put here for a purpose. You are alive today because there is a meaning, a purpose, a plan for your life. You still have work to do!”

This is and easy read that will only take you a day or two when you get started, but you should keep it close when you need a little push. Highly recommended!

I enjoy reading Dr
By Tim Yearneau
I enjoy reading Dr. Register's tweets on Twitter, and as they follow from her book I couldn't resist buying it. While this book is aimed at women I've found it offers a lot for men too. I especially like that she includes personal stories from her own life to drive a point home or to illustrate a state of being. She shows her own bumps and bruises, which makes what she says all the more meaningful. She has a nurturing style of writing that really identifies her thought process and to me the reader, words of encouragement. She has a unique way of expressing a thought that I may or may not have heard before. While some of her personal stories make me go "Oh, my," others make me chuckle, and in the end, I follow it to the point she is making. My personal favorite is Eddie with 2 glasses, and her opening quote to "Stop zooming in and focusing on what other people have going on in their lives...." This way of putting it, this message, really resonates with me. Thank you.

Register's words are truly powerful, and has motivated me, to be the best me, that I can be. It's also, forced me, to get out of my comfort zone, and push myself to do and be more! I'm really looking forward to her next publishing. I highly recommend this one!

Writing History: A Professor’s Life, by Michael Bliss

One of Canada’s best-known and most-honoured biographers turns to the raw material of his own life in Writing History. A university professor, prolific scholar, public intellectual, and frank critic of the world he has known, Michael Bliss draws on extensive personal diaries to describe a life that has taken him from small-town Ontario in the 1950s to international recognition for his books in Canadian and medical history. His memoir ranges remarkably widely: it encompasses social history, family tragedy, a critical insider’s view of university life, Canadian national politics, and, above all, a rare glimpse into the craftsmanship that goes into the research and writing of history in our time.

Whether writing about pigs and millionaires, the discovery of insulin, sleazy Canadian politicians, or the founders of modern medicine and brain surgery, Michael Bliss is noted for the clarity of his prose, the honesty of his opinions, and the breadth of his literary interests.

Review
Weaving his private life, politics, social movements, university affairs and his professional career into a unified texture, supported by decades of journal writing where he vented and recorded his life, Bliss offers an engaging memoir, fast paced and well written and very hard to put down. (Literary Review of Canada 2011-12-01)

…a readable, entertaining, and at times, surprising chronicle of the life (so far) of one of Canada’s best known academics. (University Affairs 2011-12-14)

Review

This fascinating account of a fine historian's life is also the best memoir we have by a Canadian scholar.

(J.L. Granatstein, author of Who Killed Canadian History?)

Michael Bliss is the very model of a modern historian -- a fine scholar who is also constantly engaged in the public debates of our times. In his splendid Writing History, Bliss tells us how he does both history and controversy, and much about himself as well, and all in brilliant prose.

Many of Michael's youthful memories are also mine! Joan Jenner
By JJ
I highly recommend this book. Of course, I am somewhat biased in my opinion of this memoir since Michael Bliss’ memories are similar to many of mine! I also grew up in Kingsville, Ontario in the 1950’s and 60’s and knew Michael as an older student at my school. His descriptions of the people, town and environs are so like my memories, I was enthralled reading about them. I have also read Michael Bliss’ books on The Discovery of Insulin and Banting, both informative and very readable.

Three Sons: Franz Kafka and the Fiction of J. M. Coetzee, Philip Roth, and W. G. Sebald (Avant-Garde & Modernism Studies), by Daniel L. Me

Franz Kafka was a self-conscious writer whose texts were highly if mysteriously autobiographical. Three giants of contemporary fiction—J. M. Coetzee, Philip Roth, and W. G. Sebald—have all acknowledged their debt to the work of Kafka, both in interviews and in their own academic essays and articles for a general readership about him. In this striking feat of literary scholarship, Daniel Medin finds that the use of Kafka by Coetzee, Roth, and Sebald is similarly self-reflexive and autobiographical. That writers from such divergent national and ethnic traditions can have such unique critical readings of Kafka, and that Kafka could exert such a powerful influence over their oeuvres, Medin contends, attests to the central place of Kafka in the contemporary literary imagination.
