Struggles over drinking water, new outbreaks of mass violence, ethnic cleansing, civil wars in the earth’s poorest countries, endless flows of refugees: these are the new conflicts and forces shaping the world of the 21st century. They no longer hinge on ideological rivalries between great powers but rather on issues of class, religion and resources. The genocides of the last century have taught us how quickly social problems can spill over into radical and deadly solutions. Rich countries are already developing strategies to garner resources and keep ‘climate refugees’ at bay.
In this major new book Harald Welzer shows how climate change and violence go hand in hand. Climate change has far-reaching consequences for the living conditions of peoples around the world: inhabitable spaces shrink, scarce resources become scarcer, injustices grow deeper, not only between North and South but also between generations, storing up material for new social tensions and giving rise to violent conflicts, civil wars and massive refugee flows. Climate change poses major new challenges in terms of security, responsibility and justice, but as Welzer makes disturbingly clear, very little is being done to confront them.

Climate Wars, a profound book
By Ann on Longboat Key
This is a very important book. It goes way beyond whether we are in Global Warming or not. It assumes that we are, as well as do all of the creditable scientists who study the question today. The book tells what is really going on and what our politicians either have no clue about or are unwilling to confront.
The problem is that Global Warming has been studied by the Natural Sciences. They can give the scientific explanation of things and how the problem will progress over linear time. However the problem needs to be studied by the social scientists, as a cultural, ethnic, class, religious, over population problem which will present as a Global catastrophe with in the next several decades.
There are so many ideas explored, violence... the Holocost, Darfur, other ethnic wars, how history either does or does not repeat itself. Welzer explains how the poor will always suffer the most, how Africa is already suffering horrible wars because the land is drying up, the trees are gone, the water is limited. How will we as a society deal with hords of immigrants who are already approaching our and Northern European shores? The problem is unblievably complex and deserves a Global not a country by country response. If you care about the planet's future, read this book. It will take you far beyond the current rhetoric. A profound and intelligent assessment of Global Warming of today.

Humanity's Predicament, Brilliantly Drawn
By GlobalChangeSupercenter5
Get ready for a horrifying look at the basic contours of our social world , written in unflinching, easily accessible, firechat form by an academic who has put his mind to good use, that of confronting apocalypse, in basic rejection of the positivist orientation of the ivory tower.
This is a slender volume, free of jargon, willing to go beyond comfort and bromides and technical sophistication towards common confrontation with intellectual reality. There are at least a dozen pages where Welzer brilliantly presents our looming predicaments in stark, memorable form, often incorporating the suggestive examples of World War II and Rwanda to buttress his austere, corrosive philosophical insights. Read this book along with Giles Slade's equally brave and compelling climate book, but make sure you do not end your reading of Welzer's book with the penultimate chapter, a weak brand of hopium that posits some new-thinking-new society emanating from some ahistorical, unreal massive paradigm switch or some other. Welzer even brings out that hoary, false dictum from Einstein that new problems cannot be solved using old thinking, or whatever mangle of fortune cookie aphorism it was from the old scribbler, but human social reality does not instantly mutate from unknown sources, it grows out of existing structures and power.
Climate change is "unsolvable," as Herr Welzer states bravely elsewhere, so chalk that unfortunate short chapter up to a moment of irrationalism from the professor, and let the rest of this masterwork speak for the social truth that we are not going to "solve" climate change using the same structures and same corporations that brought humanity to the abyss of catastrophe. Climate change is going to solve us, in differential and protracted ways, but solve us nonetheless.

Waterworld
By The Emperor
This was a well written, and interesting book though it was somewhat worrying.
It is a translation of a work by an academic but it is easy to follow and understand.
It is quite short and some of the content is quite general but I felt that I learned a lot from it.
