Review
This splendid, exciting, beautifully illustrated account of the Age of Exploration relates events so dramatic that they would have been dismissed as implausible fiction if they hadn't actually happened. Don't think of this as just' a book for kids: children's parents will find it equally gripping and informative. —Jared Diamond, Professor of Geography at UCLA, and author of the best-selling Pulitzer-Prize-winner Guns, Germs, and Steel

Should this book be addressed to young readers?
By Pascota
While this book has a well-summarized history of exploration, and good reference illustrations, I was shocked to find graphic renditions of human sacrifices and torture/dismembering. I am glad I took a look at our library copy before handing it over to my young children.
I do appreciate a frank description of history, however, grisly details should be reserved to more mature audiences, in my opinion. I cannot imagine how the other reviewers reported that children loved the book...
I had a nightmare after seeing the grisly images, and I certainly did not want to expose my children to the same experience.

Excellent book about early exploration...
By M. Gregory
We really liked the way that all of the information in this book was organized and presented. Excellent spring-board type book for a study on early exploration. Great read aloud for the whole family with plenty of pictures. I, as well as the kids really learned a lot!

Simply brilliant
By M. Heiss
Develops the Age of Exploration through the famous Europeans, plus Leif Erickson (briefly) and Zheng He (VERY briefly). Presents the problem with Venetian-Muslim control of the spice and silk route and explains (briefly) the Reconquista, which freed up adventurous European armies to go a-conquering New Worlds.
Presents migration and culture contact, and in a thoughtful way shows the negative results as well as the positive -- for the Europeans as well as the people they encountered/enslaved. Very interesting perspective.
Wonderful timelines and great illustrations, photographs, and maps.
This book is a keeper.
