The Essence of Beauty

I spent all last evening reading snippets of The Beauty of Fractals (those few paragraphs that a layman could understand) and admiring the sheer beauty of the diagrams/maps. I had not realised there was an aesthetic component to mathematics, and I certainly did not know that aspects of what is generally thought of as a dry science can be so visually appealing, not to say stunning.
I cannot understand why some people would argue the intrinsic artistic merit of something computer-generated and 'unnatural', when the results speak for themselves.
Beauty, true, is perceived, and lies in the eye of the beholder. It can be very subjective. But there are certain aspects of visual appeal that go beyond that. One would think that a symmetry of form, the complementary use of colours, the balance of shape and form, light and shade, arcs and curves--all these combine to give an objective, irrefutable fact of beauty that transcends thought and emotions, if not the senses.
In a couple of the chapters, it was said, and here I paraphrase:
The two modes of analysis and intuition as human means of understanding the natual world--need they be considered at opposite poles? Do they not complement one another? Are the thinker and the dreamer not one?
I find that very intriguing, just as I find the idea of chaos and order existing together in natural, dynamic processes being actually TYPICAL of Nature.
The word 'Chaos' has such negative connotations, implying confusion and destruction, but if I were to replace it with the word 'Disorder', then things begin to fall into place.
There can be no Order if there were no Disorder, for how then would we know the difference? In fact, one of the writers go so far as to say that it is the very existence of Disorder within Order that confers the essence of beauty found in Nature.
That is so true. It is the very non-linear aspect of Nature, that which mathematics, up till Mandelbrot, have been unable to map, that is so appealing in the visual sense.
In Nature, which, apart from abhorring vacuums, also has no place for a straight line (oh, how the poor, innocent straight line is maligned in the preface), beauty is inarguable, irrefutable, and only after that does it have history and context, different to and for each beholder.
So both Chaos/Disorder and Order co-exist in Nature, hand in hand. Order alone, rigidly disciplined, artificially-imposed, seems to require Disorder to breathe life into it.
Taking this a step further, our perception of beauty in all things is affected by Nature.
In yet another chapter, someone quoted someone else and here I go
paraphrasing again.
Beauty in science is the same as beauty in other disciplines-art, music,literature, what have you. 'A fog of events, and suddenly you see a connection. It expresses a complex of human concerns that goes deeply to you, that connects things that were always in you that were never put together before.'
The thinker and the dreamer co-exist within each person, just as the analytical and intuitive modes of thought co-exist, not at opposite poles,but complementing one another.
Intuition and analysis complement, rather than confound (or they should, gods-willing).
The artist and the scientist complement each other, i.e. Art and Science are not the opposing polarites of disciplines as some would have us think.
The thinker and the dreamer ARE one.
And this book has shown that the essence of beauty lies in the marriage of Art and Science.

Although one of the earliest titles to bring fractals into the mainstream, 'The Beauty of Fractals' isn't as visually exciting as the follow-up, 'Chaos and Fractals', and it's a very dry read - in 1986 complex dynamics were an esoteric field of mathematics that had yet to transfer to student posters and rave videos. At this price it's restricted to people who absolutely need it, although along with 'Godel, Escher, Bach' it's one of the seminal hackish coffee-table books.

Time goes by... the pictures fade

Amazon dot com gives no credit for my earlier reviews.... I wrote the first review without thinking or spell checking, fast. There are still parts of this book I can't duplicate! And parts that are just written so bad no one can understand them, but most of it stands the test of time, like Mandelbrot's article. This will probably be a classic in the future! I think the free Fractint documentation is probably better for a beginner or Hans Lauwerier's " Fractals".

J. Louis Martyn is Edward Robinson Professor Emeritus of Biblical Theology at Union Theological Seminary in New York City. He is the author of "The Gospel of John in Christian History" and "Theological Issues in the Letters of Paul".

The gold standard

I ordered this along with many other references when preparing to teach a class on Galatians. The others were helpful and some were impressive but without doubt, this was by far the most objective, scholarly, and best researched volume of the ones I purchased. It is truly comprehensive in its coverage of Galatians as well as all related themes (contextual, societal, theological, politico/historical, philological). Every conceivable issue connected with the Galatian epistle and the theology of the Apostle Paul must have been addressed in this volume. Be advised that if one is looking for devotional reading or "spiritualization" of the text, this is not the volume for them. For those wanting an academic volume it is money well spent. I wonder if all Anchor Bible commentaries are this meticulously written?

Took me night after night into 14th-century England and at many times I didn’t want to leave

The more I think about Now Is The Time, the more I can say I enjoyed this book. Told in alternating perspective chapters this title took me night after night into 14th-century England and at many times I didn’t want to leave or take my earphone out. The beginning chapters reminded me of understated classic historical fiction titles that in my mind have become must re-reads and those to share with new readers eager to experience history in many descriptive passages and introductions to fascinating characters. The final chapters though ran together leaving me with a different marked feel sadly but overall the elements of research and the commitment of weaving a strong yarn were clearly evident and there were many times I just lost track of time falling into this commanding world of diverse forms of power, avarice and desperate searches and battles for meaning and voices of the forgotten masses. Encountering this type of fine storytelling and excellent voice accompaniment was a perfect distraction for me and I would highly recommend this audio version for night-time listeners.

'I will not kneel'

Melvyn Bragg’s latest novel is simply outstanding. A quietly polemical study of ‘haves and have-nots’ builds to a devastating climax, inevitable in its tragic outcomes.

This is a novel of the so-called Peasants Revolt of 1381. This episode of English history has traditionally been passed over with scarcely a glance in contrast to the colourful pageant of kings and queens. Contemporary sources emphasise the courage of the young king Richard II in the face of brutal, thuggish and violent rebels. While using the sources carefully Bragg presents a new interpretation. These rebels are not all peasants. Many are artisans, many educated, many from the mercantile classes of the newly rich. None of them, however, belong to the ruling Anglo-Norman nobility. What Bragg gives us, at times literally, is the voice of the people, a voice which opposes privilege and exploitation.

The narrative technique is artfully simple, for the bulk of the text carrying the reader along in shocking events of the three days of revolt. This story is exciting and bracing, like a rollercoaster ride, tumultuously focussing on a wide array of characters and events: the king’s mother, princess Joan, careful of privilege and wealth; the 14 year old king Richard, beloved of the people, who betrays their trust; his various advisors and supporters in all their flawed humanity; the remarkable Walter Tyler, soldier, reluctant leader whose abilities are tested and proven; John Ball, maverick priest, remembered for his rhyme, ‘When Adam delved and Eve span/who was then the gentleman?’.

Bragg says in his Afterward that the novel was 15 years in the writing; interesting as it seems so timely. Perhaps it has always been timely, just never properly told before. This is a novel of supreme artistry, deceptive in its narrative simplicity, wonderfully impressive and convincing in its humanity.

In 1831, the greatest "grass roots" revolt of English History occurred. It is usually called the Peasant's Revolt, but actually involved much of the emerging middle class and some gentry as well. Little is known of most of it's leaders partly because they were so successful in their dedicated destruction of all the records of their oppressors. Wat Tyler has been a blank canvas appropriated by revolting people from that time to the present. Melvyn Bragg invents and speculates, as is the practice of all "historical fiction" (a dangerous oxymoron). His Wat Tyler is pure of heart and family and naive almost to the point of stupidity as he is drawn into leadership. The narrative is centered on Wat's path from tradesman to dismemberment but includes the imagined perspective of others such as the 14 year old King, Richard II, and his mother, Joan of Kent to illuminate wider themes of the times.
I think that Bragg's discomfort at the lack of evidence for his portrayal of Tyler makes his invention wooden and unconvincing. The most powerful aspect of this unsatisfying book is the portrayal the King's corruption by his mother and the court into spectacular betrayals of his word and his people by placing his seal on rights and pardons on one day, then sending out torture and slaughter to retrieve and destroy the records of his oath.
We often give thanks for governments that respect the rule of law, but forget that laws can enslave just as arbitrarily and brutally whether passed democratically or by a despot.

This is a very good book, one of the best I've read on the topic of mental toughness and mindset. It is concise and to the point.. I especially liked the SEAL Missions and Conquering Fear chapters. Very well written – worth the investment!

I'm a fan of mindset and mental toughness books and this one is very good. I liked the fact that there was no "fluff" - it was direct and to the point. The information was well-written and the techniques explained logically. Should be read by anyone seeking to elevate their mindset!

Decent minimalist book on being a persistent person

Fairly good. Decent advice on some of the aspects of what makes a person in special operations committed and focused. It is no secret to success. It is the same tried and true course that men of various fields employ, a constant willingness to go forward, continued momentum in a given direction, and the willingness to endure unpleasantness purposely. A good short guide. Will als o give you some insight into why they train the way they do--because the combat is even worse. Good book overall for fans of special forces.

Wonderful perspective!

We loved this book! The photographs of architectural gems and the parallel art work create a new perspective on the serious work of play for children. This is not to say the book isn't fun--it is! The words accompanying the pictures have a great rhythm and are creatively placed on the page. Many of the activities and the structures are recognizable to both children and adults. Also, the point of view is wonderfully international. This is a book to be enjoyed together again and again by people of any age.

Clever way to celebrate building

I bought this for my nephew and niece for Christmas. I love how it presents side by side both an architect's and child's version of building. The illustrations are delightful. I packaged my gift with a bunch of popsicle sticks and other crafts materials to inspire them.

A beautiful book for young builders and their grown-ups, too!

Lovely, realistic paintings of children at work and play with a variety of construction materials are paired with photos of "matching" architecture from around the world, and accompanied by concise, playful poetry.
The pairings are well selected and represent not only traditional block building, but also sand play, art activities, nature play, and more. The paintings in this book have beautifully captured the focus of a child at work.

My only wish is that the architectural photos paired with each painting were of a more consistent quality. Some are truly beautiful and well composed, but others feel more like the stock photos that would grace the uninspiring pages of a ten year old textbook.

The book still makes a lovely addition to the classroom, where it will support children's interest in building and in the world around them. It reflects the ways in which young children typically interact with materials very well, and is sure to inspire play and "spark" many meaningful conversations about shapes, lines, buildings, and materials.

The book has a place on the shelf of every adult educator and advocate, as well. It has a subtle but strong message about how very valuable concrete, hands-on learning opportunities are for young children, in a format that can be enjoyed and appreciated by early childhood professionals, parents, and policy makers alike.

Terry Pratchett is a phenomenon unto himself. Never read a Discworld book? The closest comparison might be Monty Python and the Holy Grail, with its uniquely British sense of the absurd, and side-splitting, smart humor. Jingo is the 20th of Pratchett's Discworld novels, and the fourth to feature the City Guard of Ankh-Morpork. As Jingo begins, an island suddenly rises between Ankh-Morpork and Al-Khali, capital of Klatch. Both cities claim it. Lord Vetinari, the Patrician, has failed to convince the Ruling Council that force is a bad idea, despite reminding them that they have no army, and "I believe one of those is generally considered vital to the successful prosecution of a war." Samuel Vimes, Commander of the City Watch, has to find out who shot the Klatchian envoy, Prince Khufurah, and set fire to their embassy, before war breaks out.

Pratchett's characters are both sympathetic and outrageously entertaining, from Captain Carrot, who always finds the best in people and puts it to work playing football, to Sergeant Colon and his sidekick, Corporal Nobbs, who have "an ability to get out of their depth on a wet pavement." Then there is the mysterious D'reg, 71-hour Ahmed. What is his part in all this, and why 71 hours? Anyone who doesn't mind laughing themselves silly at the idiocy of people in general and governments in particular will enjoy Jingo. --Nona Vero

YA-Jingo, the twentieth Discworld novel to be published in the United States, is a worthy addition to the series. It's a quiet night. Maybe too quiet. Solid Jackson and his son are fishing the waters between Ankh-Morpork and Al-Khali when their boat runs aground. To their amazement, an iron chicken rises out of the water, followed shortly by the island of Leshp. Solid Jackson immediately claims the island as Ankh-Morpork territory. There's only one problem. Greasy Arif and his son are also fishing for Curious Squid, and Arif swears that the island belongs to Al-Khali. Both cities are determined to annex it. By jingo, this means war. Ankh-Morpork is outgunned and out-manned but the city's nobles don't plan to let that stop them from carrying on the noble traditions of chivalry and showing those Klatchians what's what. This book is just as funny, clever, and unpredictable as the previous titles. Pratchett fans will not be disappointed, and new readers will not be confused. Jingo expands upon the lives of characters from titles in the series, but readers don't need to be familiar with them to enjoy this one. It's fast-paced, with lots of twists and turns, unexpected events, and football.

Pratchett's best-known creation is "Discworld," in particular the fantastic medieval urban city-state Ankh-Morporkh, populated by humans, dwarves, and trolls aligned in a firm social pecking order. A keen observer of human behavior, Pratchett portrays nearly every conceivable type of Earthly people, and they work through social issues as the "Discworld" stories unfold. Jingo takes on discrimination and xenophobia as the crusty Sam Vimes, leader of the city's policing Watch, heads off war with the neighboring land of Klatch. Hogfather is a bit less accessible, possibly because most characters are so abstract. Discworld's equivalent of Santa Claus, the Hogfather has a price on his head. Death plays a large part, and his diminutive rodent counterpart, the Death of Rats, also appears. Death's granddaughter Susan is the worldly heroine who saves the day in this adventure involving the city's Magicians. Similar to the "Discworld" novel Reaper Man, Hogfather is an optional purchase. Jingo is highly recommended, especially if your patrons appreciate British humor. Nigel Planer is a stunning narrator in these stories, delivering a wide range of voices and styles while remaining wonderfully energetic and consistent.DDouglas C. Lord, Hartford P.L., CT

Simply stated, this is one of Pratchett's best. He brilliantly skewers politics, warmongering, racism, engineering, time management, navigational terms, police work, and foreign customs, for a start. He then manages to poke fun at (as opposed to ridiculing) humans, werewolves, dwarves, trolls, gnomes, Curious Squid, and the odd orangutang. His treatment of the temperature-sensitive intelligence of Corporal Detritus is well done, and the habit he gives of Commander Vimes returning to his old habits as a street copper even in the middle of ceremonial events had me rolling on the floor.
The demonic organizer and the temporal slip-up was a very nice touch... although the reeling off of the appointments in the alternative final defense (which I shall skip for those who haven't read this yet - I envy you people! ) I found honestly to be as chilling as anything Stephen King ever wrote.
I don't believe I've ever read a bad book of his. Some may have been better than others, but not one of them have I put down and said, "My God, why did I read this?" Pratchett writes with a compassionate eye to his characters, keeping them comical without making them ridiculous.
These are books that I'll still be re-reading 20 years from now, and I'll wager I'll still find something new to laugh at each time.

A standard outing

This is by no means the best of the Watch novels ... but even an average Pratchett novel is a thing of beauty. By turns deadly serious and laugh-out-loud funny, the book has only three weaknesses (which other reviewers have touched upon).
First, most of the Watch characters get barely anything to do. Second, the Patrician is way out of character. And finally, the ending is pretty weak.
Nevertheless, this is a still a great and very entertaining read. I wouldn't recommend it as a starting point, though, as Guards! Guards! is a better introduction, Men at Arms is funnier, and Feet of Clay is a better mystery.

The difference between soldiers and coppers is...

This was the novel that got me hooked on the Discworld and the Ankh-Morpork City Watch. It's very very funny and also wickedly intelligent. Someone here pointed out that Terry Pratchett is actually a philosopher masquerading as a funny man. Perhaps the reason why some people don't like "Jingo" is that the philosophy is a bit more overt here than in other Discworld offerings.
Those of us who were around when Maggie (excuse me, Baroness Thatcher) launched her little homage to the 19th century in the Falklands/Malvinas will probably enjoy "Jingo" a little more than others I suspect, but the book itself rings true on so many different levels that it transcends such a particular interpretation. This is Pratchett on the subject of nationalism, militarism and racism with Sam Vimes as usual cast in the role of ironic observer and moral center.
I actually liked seeing Vetinari out and about more, and it's clear that this novel marks the beginning of a more three-D presence in the Discworld universe for both Sergeant Colon and the ambiguously human Corporal Nobbs. Leonard of Quirm needs more work though. Once you got the initial conceit, he became tiresome quite quickly.
Captain Carrot, Sergeant Angua and Corporal Detritus do their usual sterling service. I had hoped for more from Constable Visit-the-Infidel-With-Explanatory-Pamphlets given that the conflict between Klatch and Ankh-Morpork was partly a religious one, but you can't have everything.
Perhaps my favorite things in the novel were the face-off between the city nobles and Vimes, the Demon Pocket Organizer, and Vimes' precise and beautifully-articulated exposition of the differences between soldiers and policemen. Vimes, I suspect is an old-fashioned copper who believes in justice, rather than merely protecting and serving the law. Too bad the LAPD doesn't read Terry Pratchett.
