disappointing work by a great author

I had read Abraham Cahan's "the rise of David Levinsky" and loved it. Cahan wrote relatively few novels. So when I discovered this novel by Cahan I bought it. If you want to be extraordinarily impressed by his work buy Levinsky, Not this novel.

Yekl, for example, leaves his Kosher and very Religious Jewish wife and baby behind and settle with a job in a garment sweatshop - like most all of them at the time.. Will he bring his wife and baby boy over? Will Yekl ,who
shaves his beard and dresses nattily and gves most of his Yiddishkeit up continue to love his wife? This is about those who wanted so much - to become "Yenkees"- Americans,- not greeners, anymore. The real deal. The wonderful film Hester Street is based on this tale. Enjoy!

As the sheer heft of the book might indicate, the story is complicated. Much of the extensive research conducted by Hugh Thomas relates to rivalries both in Europe and Africa. The scope of the book is amazingly broad as the author covers virtually every aspect of the subject from the early days of the 16th century when great commercial houses were set up throughout Europe to the 1713 Peace Treaty of Utrecht, which gave the British the right to import slaves into the Spanish Indies. The account includes the anti-slavery patrols of the 19th century and the final decline and abolition in the early 20th century. Through the skillful weaving of numerous official reports, financial documents, and firsthand accounts, Thomas explains how slavery was socially acceptable and shows that people and governments everywhere were involved in itAfrom African kings and Arab slave traders to the Europeans and Americans who bought and transported them to the New World. Despite the volatility of the subject, the author remains emotionally detached in his writing, yet produces a highly readable, informative book. A superb addition to YA collections.

A heavy read, but worth the time

This is a very deep, comprehensive read -- rich with history and information, very educational and enlightening on an enormously important subject. But some sections are extremely thick with details and it can be a slow read through some parts, especially the first few chapters. But it's worth the time to get through. Not a light read. In fact, I took my time with this book, setting it aside for lighter reading from time to time.

Nine Months

Arghhhh! This book took me nine months to get through! Still, this super-detailed, eye-opening account of the slave trade should be required reading for every high school senior in the world. I was suprised not only by the culpability of the Africans themselves but by that of Hume, Swift, Voltaire...the greatest champions of liberty our civilization has known! I can't believe I didn't know this stuff!
I hope there will be a second edition that takes us up to the slavery currently going on in Mauritania and the Sudan.

Barbara got her first horse, Country Squire, when she was eleven years old and considers herself lucky to have spent at least as much time on him as she did in the dirt.� Next came Yankee Doodle who was far more cooperative and patient with her.� Over the years, she showed in equitation classes, hunter classes, went on hunter paces, taught horseback riding at her stable called Sunshine Farm, and went fox hunting on an Appaloosa who would jump anything.� With her Dutch Warmblood, Barbara began eventing and again found herself on a horse with great patience and who definitely taught her everything important she knows about horses.

In book 3 the characters are developed further, and more of the past is revealed. Greer's mother comes to visit, or will she stay. We get to see the struggles that she creates and brings to both Talia and Greer. Also get to see the love that both girls have for the horses that are a big part of their lives.

This is one of my favorite books from now on. I fell in love with Talia and Lockie. I love the bond between Talia and CB, it reminds me a lot of my horse and I. I love this series and can't wait to read the next book!

This book was recommended to me by a tutor in a school where I volunteer because our bulldog is a reading dog there. Anyone who loves bulldogs will appreciate this book which may not be well-known in the U.S. The story is delightful and the drawings are superb.
