Some stories take their time teasing the reader, while others just dive right in. Roommate's Delight is one of the latter. JC Winchester opens his tale with Kylie's surprise discovery of her transsexual roommate, a moment of honest shock on her part and even more honest defensive anger from Dakota.

Despite Dakota's fears of being outed and ousted from the college dorms, Kylie is mature enough to let their emotions subside and discuss the matter later. When they do - fueled with more than just a little alcohol - we learn just how tenuous Dakota's position is, and just how little she has indulged her own femininity.

To say that conversation leads to more is hardly a spoiler, or there wouldn't be a story here. What's wonderful about the story is the way that relationship develops, moving from drunken exploration, to curiosity, to drunken reciprocation, and to something approaching romance. It's a realistic story, and one that deals sympathetically with transgender issues, further distinguished by some genuinely touching erotic moments.

Geared More for a Younger Audience

The concept of this book/series is definitely unique and interesting enough to warrant a read. Every 360 days, the earth gets too close to the sun and has to spin counter-clockwise for five days to back away from it. The majority of the population sleeps during these five days not even realizing they do so. Then there are the others. The others "fall" into an alternate reality. They wake up in this alternate reality alone and wondering what happened to everyone. This was Nicky's fate.

While she's out looking for survival supplies in her new situation, she meets Marshal. After a life-or-death situation, Marshal decides that Nicky's worth keeping around. Eventually they meet up with more people and decide to confront a bully who's blocking the water supply into the valley. Conflicts ensues, friends turn into enemies, and enemies become allies.

I think a young adult would enjoy reading this story more than I. Not to say that I didn't enjoy it, but it is definitely geared more for a younger audience rather than adults.

An ill wind that blows nobody any good.

Every 360 days the Earth spins in the opposite direction resulting in some people; animals and inanimate objects falling into another world, another Earth where no one ages and no babies are born. Seventeen year old Nicky awakens to find to her horror that she’s trapped in this world, with no possible escape. She meets various people: some of whom will help her survive in this new reality while others will try to hurt her.

Liked this so I was disappointed to find that there’s no sequel yet. Storyline was exciting enough to make me not want to put the book down until I’d finished it. Book reminded me of Sea of Dreams by C.L. Bevill.

About the Author
Elie Kedourie, at the time of his death in 1992, was Emeritus Professor of Politics at the University of London and Fellow of the British Academy. Author of numerous books, he was a leading authority on nationalism, and on the Arab and Jewish worlds.

flawed ideological history of nationalism

Elie Kedourie obviously has an axe to grind about nationalism - as a Jew he was exiled from Iraq and settled in London. In this book he traces the ideological development of nationalism from Kant, Herder and Fichte, claiming that nationalism was invented when Fichte gave his Addresses to the German Nation in the early nineteenth century. Kedourie unfortunately places far too much emphasis on Kant - who was much more concerned with the individual than the community - and not enough on Hegel. Kedourie also neglects such important writers as Rousseau and Mill and does not attempt to trace just how Fichte et al. influenced specific nationalists. Nevertheless this is a well-written polemic against nationalism from someone who dealt with it first hand.

This is a good companion to The Chatham House Version & and Other Middle Eastern Studies.

If you are going to study political science, and/or politics of the Middle East region, read this book first before reading Kedourie's other work The Chatham House Version (I went in reverse, reading the latter first. Nationalism will give you the background to understand his points in the latter.) I will say that it is not for the novice looking for a quick primer to make a few talking points, as it deals with some more abstract concepts to political science topics; he does cover Kant, and other philosophies that have led to self-determination-nationalism (and, how such does lead to autocratic regimes under fascist/socialist/communist ideals . If you are acquainted or knowledgeable in such subjects, it is old hat to understand.) A good read (I got it yesterday, and I am half way through it.)

A useful exploration into the romantic European notions of what constitutes a national identity. Kedourie pegs modern Nationalism emerging as an all inclusive idea requiring the consent of the governed as an outgrowth of the French Revolution but, in an interesting fashion, credits Napoleon's rhetoric which accompanied his conquests for its spread. (pp94-96) However, given his mid 20th century perspective, following two world wars, he's rather disdainful of the outcome. In Kedourie's view, the problem with using unitary definitions such as language, culture or religion as the basis for the state is that inevitably there will be conflicts with geography - the physical boundaries of a country almost always include more than one group. A state that insists on a single identity will inevitably be exclusionary. He's also critical of a style of totalitarian nationalism that erases the boundaries between public and private.

Nationalism, argues Kedourie, is neither a creature of the left or the right, arising from both. In the 19th century nationalism was considered to be highly progressive, and indeed, Woodrow Wilson 14 Points underlining the Paris 1919 Peace Conference emphasized the acquisition of a national status for subject peoples to be amongst its highest ideals. However as they achieved power, men such as Pilsudski, Mussolini and Chiang Kai-shek who were perceived as initially being on the left, were now viewed as being on the right. This became instrumentalized as a propaganda device in the Soviet toolbox - if nationalism was against capitalism and imperialism it was progressive; when it was deemed to go against the tenets of the Politburo, it became right wing and regressive.

A strong argument cited for nationalism is that national power structures are an essential advantage in helping a culture to survive. On the other hand he cites positively the longevity of empires such as the Ottoman who's system of millets allowed a plurality of cultures to co-exist, until broken apart by national ideals. He counters the case of the Poles and the Magyars, that their historic claims to national states with historic boundaries by pointing out that while true, these were not truly nationalist in the modern sense because they were feudal societies ruled by the gentrified few. (pp119) But then so was the Ottoman Empire and Kedourie fails to consider that large portions of the Empire were nomadic, up to 50%, and that the Porte would order the movement of peoples in order to manipulate the mix of ethnicities and maintain order in favour of the State.

National identity is probably weakest at the borderlands - he cites examples such as Macedonia/Albania where pollsters would switch identities as needed by the week. Kedourie finds plebiscites (the recent referendum on Scottish Independence would be a good example) as problematic as affirmative results are usually thought of a permanent (after all, they are disruptive in a major way) and he would rather that they be more frequent, so as to constantly reflect the changing will the people, like elections. A way of thinking about medicine

Medical books fall into two main types. Firstly we have our large descriptive textbooks which give us words and pictures to describe what is happening in our patients. Books such as Davidson's, Harrison's and Kumar and Clarke exemplify this tradition. They paint a picture of the practice of medicine.

The second type of book forces us to ask sharp questions about the pictures we have about our medicine. They make us question our epistemology. They ask us "how do you know that is so?" and "How would you know if that wasn't like that?" They ask us to think not, "what do I know?" but "How do I know that I know that?" They make us think about our thinking. They feed an endless line of doubt and dissatisfaction- that ultimately questions existing descriptions of how things are- and leads onto new and innovative ways of conceiving and treating problems. This book is firmly in this second category.

Books in this second category suffer in that they are rarely compulsory texts, or fully examined. Medical students and candidates for post-graduate exams are largely questioned on the existing knowledge- as described in the large standard textbooks. They are rarely pushed much into examination of their thinking- the basic descriptions are mostly taken as enough. My profession suffers because it often relies so much on description, rather than primary thinking and analysis of concepts.

When you really get interested in medicine then the books in this second category become much more interesting and challenging. Yes you have to know the standard textbooks reasonably well, but the fun in medicine comes from the second category books- those that make us think about our thinking.

This current book is excellent. This new edition lives up to the standards of it preceding editions (the very fact an academic book has gone into so many editions is testament that many have found it useful.) The book does it exactly what it says it will do- by the end of it you will know how to read a paper. You will also know how to write a paper better too- you will know what people are looking for in a paper- and so what to provide to editors, reviewers and readers. The book is a clear guide to understanding what a paper is trying to tell you and how to know if it is doing so accurately, fairly, and within the limits of its measurements. The narrative is clear and well structured- and at the end of the book are all the key checklists you will need if you are reading a paper. At any stage of your medical career- from just starting reading papers to people who are already experienced academics and peer reviewers- this book will help sharpen your understanding of medical papers.

The book goes some way beyond its title. It moves onto questions about how to use the medical evidence base well in care of an individual patient. It deals well with criticisms of evidence based practice. It helps readers evaluate reviews and meta-analyses well. It deals well with how guidelines are constructed.

There is a huge amount in this book. It's a rich book about medicine, and more specifically how we can really claim that we know something in medicine, and how we can then use that knowledge well for patients. It goes far beyond just "reading a paper." It is well constructed, and will give doctors at all stages of their career something to think about- whether for the first time- or as revision and reminder. There's something about basic ideas that makes them worth revisiting regularly. They may be basic, but they are very dangerous if they go without being said.

I can recommend this book to all medical students and doctors- it covers basic skills that we all need to understand our medical knowledge and how it is constructed. At different stages of your career you will take different learning points from it. But at each reading you will learn or remind yourself of something worthwhile from it.

Excellent guide for understanding research studies

I have used this book and its previous editions as a textbook for a course in the complementary medicine field. This course is for students needing a basic understanding of scientific research. I have found it one of the most easily readable and complete guides in the subject. It is very well organized. I especially like the statistics chapter which is also basic but provides a nice groundwork and explanation of the part of research papers that students find most daunting.I highly recommend it for anyone who is interested in reading and understanding published research papers but who does not have a scientific background. Thank you Dr. Greenhalgh for this book and for keeping it up to date.
