About the Author
Winfried Corduan (Ph.D., Rice University) is professor emeritus of philosophy and religion at Taylor University, Upland, Indiana. He has led many undergraduate tours focusing on the lived religious traditions of various parts of the world. He is the author of several books, including Handmaid to Theology, Reasonable Faith: Basic Christian Apologetics, Neighboring Faiths and A Tapestry of Faiths.

Simply the best

This latest edition of Neighboring Faiths is a fully up-to-date (2012) version of the standard work on World Religions from an Evangelical Christian perspective. Though the author states his own viewpoint, he is nonetheless accurate, fair and respectful in dealing with other faiths. You will find discussions on all the major religions such as Judaism, Islam, Bahai, Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism, Sikhism, Zoroastrianism, traditional religions (African & Native American), Chinese faiths (Taoism & Confucianism) and Japanese religions (e.g. Shinto). In addition, there is an excellent introduction dealing with the topic of religion in general. I have reviewed both the earlier work (1998) and this update, and I highly recommend the work as a resource for personal study and as a textbook for classroom purposes.

Great Introduction

This book serves as a well written introduction to some of the worlds major religious movements. Not only does this book give an introduction but it does so from a verifiable anthropological position, i.e. that there is one God and at one time all people worshipped and/or were aware of this one God.

Great book for seeing what other religions belief, and how the religions came about. this is also a great book for Christians to read in order to gain knowledge of another religion, and have helpful tips on how to share the gospel with friends of another faith.

He has also authored thirty books and now serves on the adjunct faculty of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Bisagno and his wife, Uldine, have three children and eight grandchildren. They live in Houston, Texas.

Practical, Biblical, Devotional

The last time I read a rewritten classic, I was sorely disappointed. Happily, this was not the case as I read John Bisago's Pastor's Handbook.

I also found myself surprised at the style of the book - I expected to see sample worship service, sample prayers, sample sermon outlines. I found these - but I found so much more. The book is laid out as a series of devotionals - each about 2-1/2 pages in length. Each "devotional" is rooted in scripture, but it is also practical.

Beginning with a series of short devotionals (i.e. essays) on the nature and the origin of the church, the book moves on to more practical matters. The section headings provide a survey of the topics covered:

Part 1: The Church
Part 2: The Pastor as God's Man
Part 3: The Pastor as Spiritual Leader
Part 4: The Pastor as Organizational Leader
Part 5: The Pastor as Preacher
Part 6: Worship Services
Part 7: Programs and Ministries
Part 8: The Church Staff
Part 9: The Church Finances
Part 10: Facilities and Operations
Part 11: Other Important Matters
Part 12: Issues/Taking a Position

A closer look at the table of contents will provide a more detailed look at the subjects covered.

Though the author is now a retired pastor, he does not speak for the graying church. He recognizes the need for the church to be more than it was it was - it will reach out to speak to people from various cultures and different generations.

Though I come from the Wesleyan Church, I found John Bisago's book interesting, helpful and encouraging. Pastors and leaders from across the ecclesiastical spectrum would be assisted in reaching their world for Christ as they take the time to study the 400 pages of the Pastor's Handbook.

A Pastor's Handbook Written By A Man With A Pastor's Heart & Experience For Pastors!

Pastor and author Dr. John Bisagno is a pastor's pastor in that he was the pastor of the 22,000 member First Baptist Church of Houston Texas leading that church into the explosive growth that it experienced under his godly leadership. But he is also a pastor/shepherd to pastors in that he teaches them at conferences he speaks at all across the country each year.

His book, the Pastor's Handbook, is a virtual how to guide to pastoring a church. In his concise and very handy handbook Dr. Bisagno shares with the reader everything they need to know about pastoring a church. He writes about issues that relates to pastors as individuals - that is what kind of man a pastor ought to be as "God's Man, as Spiritual Leader, as Organizational Leader and as the Preacher feeding the "sheep." He also shares very practical details and insights about how to conduct church services including special services such as weddings and funerals.

Dr. Bisagno also writes about various church programs and ministries a church might have and how to administrate them. He also shares regarding the matter of a pastor and his staff, the challenging area of communicating about finances in the church as well as administering the finances, (the church budget) and the appropriate use of music during the church service. In the next to last chapter of the handbook he writes about some important matters that relates to special areas of ministry of a church such as operating a church school or presenting your church ministry through various media including TV and radio.

Finally, Dr. Bisagno tackles some key issues that today present for many pastors a spiritual quagmire; issues such as Abortion, Homosexuality, Stem-Cell Research and 17 other issues...and he does so in a loving Biblical manner.

So whether you are a student in Bible College or Seminary preparing for the pastoral ministry, a recent graduate seeking a pastorate, a new pastor or even a seasoned pastor of many years, there is much to be learned by reading this book. Reading Dr. Bisagno's handbook will not only lead you to be a godlier person but also a more effective pastor and that is a good thing.

Practical but very basic

It was an extremely practical book, yet it's very basic. It covers a lot of different areas, but none in any real detail. It's basically an overview of items. The nice thing about it is that if you don't really want to read an entire book on a subject, but want a Baptist perspective on something, his couple of pages per item is a nice resource. However, if you are looking for something that is in-depth on any particular subject, a Pator's Handbook is not a good idea. I found it to be a helpful read. In my first 18 months as a solo pastor, I ran into a lot of issues and had to figure a bunch of stuff out. It was interesting to see that many of the conclusions that I had reached during that period were shared by Bisagno. It would have probably saved me a lot of time and thinking had I owned this book from my first day as a pastor.

By this latter value in particular, the kitsch painter is able to work according to knowable standards that painting prior to modernism has established--standards that are “more than art,” for, as Nerdrum puts it, “the kitsch painter commits himself to the eternal: love, death and the sunrise.” Kitsch is a manifesto that recruits figurative painters both old and new, such as William Dyce, Paul Fenniak, Sampo Kaikkonen, Isaac Levitan, Osiris Rain, Ilya Repin, Giovanni Segantini, Valentin Serov, George Tooker, George Frederick Watts and Anders Zorn, and situates their work alongside more than 70 of Nerdrum's recent paintings. Alongside essays, poems and plays by the artist, Kitsch contains an extended dialogue on the topic between Nerdrum and Maria Kreyn.

Another good book about Nerdrum

The more I learn about Nerdrum, the better he gets.

First of all, this is a great looking book. Classic linen spine with leather title badge. Beautifully printed, lots of high quality full color reproductions of Nerdrum's work, new and old. Compared to Odd Nerdrum: Themes and Odd Nerdrum: Paintings, Sketches, and Drawings, this book does have some overlap with the images offered, but the majority of Nerdrum's work depicted here is not seen in the other books. Also, some of the work here seems less polished than work we've seen previously. Not inferior (not at all) but different. One gets the impression that work compiled in his previous books were selected very carefully to depict certain themes (obviously, the recent book being called 'Themes'). Some of the new work here would probably not fit in very well amongst some of the other paintings. For instance, one of Nerdrum's paintings here has an airplane in the sky. Really, it does. Nothing wrong with it, it just wouldn't fit with a lot of his desolate landscapes. Also depicted are several new still lifes (mostly fowl), new landscapes and of course many new figure paintings including self portraits. Many pictures of work by Nerdrum's students is here too. Some better than others, of course, but all very nice. An account of Nerdrum's school is also given which gives insight into Nerdrum's practices both as a painter and a teacher.

The 'Kitsch' text in this book is also very good. Though the book was not originally published in English, the language is very natural and easy to follow. (Unlike some translations which end up with awkward sentences and difficult rhythms.) Lots of insight about Nerdrum, and of course Kitsch, is offered here for the first time. If you're well educated with Nerdrum and have had discussions with any of his students, very little will actually be 'new.' But don't let that turn you off, as several interviews with Nerdrum, as well as poems and essays by Nerdrum himself, are also included for the first time. Again there is some overlap with his previous Kitsch book On Kitsch, but not so much that it becomes a problem.

A True Genius of Our Time

I have been a huge fan of Odd Nerdrum for many years...I consider him one of the few genius artists of this century....He is the Rembrandt of our time and I see no one even close to his talent...The Kitsch, More than Art book provides yet another view of this amazing artist and his thoughts about his own work and the work of others....I am very satisfied with my purchase....

The virtuoso painter uses Kitsch in your favor.
It's an interesting research showing that humans can understand contemporary concepts but still inside the same, always sharing your human nature, so, we like beauty, in the past, now or in the future. If dadaists killed art, at least some gave credit to that, it lives like ever and we can call it "kitsch" :-D

She is the author/editor of numerous books, has served as the President of the American Association for Applied Linguistics and is the President of the International Association of Applied Linguistics (AILA).

Larry Selinker is one of the original contributors to the research field of Second Language Acquisition, having introduced the concepts "interlanguage" and "fossilization" and having conducted one of the first empirical studies in "language transfer" research in 1969. Consistently seeking a more unified account which would integrate concepts of "interdialect," "interculture," and "interliteracy" with new media, he is now preparing a 40-plus year fossilization study on participants first looked at in 1964. He has held professorships at the Universities of Michigan and London and visiting professorships at various universities around the world. Currently, he is Visiting Professor at New York University and, exploring processes of� "around sourcing," is helping to organize Research Production Associates.

We abandoned this book

This book was erroneously selected by my professor for our graduate program class. Many students complained about the book's dry and dull content. The authors seem more interested in showing off their academic prowess and overburdening the student with too much information. The book's chapters lack any sort of crystallization to bring the concepts in the chapter together. So, our professor suggested that we abandon the book--we all overwhelmingly agreed.

This book should not be titled "an introductory course".

The book is very clearly written and informative. If you are looking for a book that covers Second language acquisition concepts, theories, and studies, I think this book would be a good resource(my opinion).

Too "Wordy"

This text book has some good information in it, but it is written in a very wordy manner which makes it difficult to follow at times. I prefer to have straight forward writing when I am learning a topic.
