Through an ethnographic case study of Chicago's Little Village neighborhood, Wounded City dispells the popular belief that a lack of community is the primary source of violence, arguing that competition for political power and state resources often undermine efforts to reduce gang violence. Robert Vargas argues that the state, through the way it governs, can contribute to distrust and division among community members, thereby undermining social cohesion. The strategic actions taken by police officers, politicians, nonprofit organizations, and gangs to collaborate or compete for power and resources can vary block by block, triggering violence on some blocks while successfully preventing it on others.

A rich blend of urban politics, sociology, and criminology, Wounded City offers a cautionary tale for elected officials, state agencies, and community based organizations involved with poor neighborhoods.

About the Author

Michael Berry Smith holds a Ph.D in rock mechanics from Rice University, Houston, Texas, USA, and has more than 30 years of experience in rock mechanics, well completions, and hydraulic fracturing. While with Amoco Production Company, Dr. Smith co-developed the framework for fracturing pressure analysis, which revolutionized the fracturing technology. He has been a consultant worldwide, served several times as a distinguished lecturer at the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), authored multiple chapters in the SPE monograph Recent Advances In Hydraulic Fracturing, and developed and presented SPE short courses on fracturing pressure analysis. Carl T. Montgomery is recognized within the industry as one of the leaders in all areas of stimulation, including hydraulic fracturing, acid fracturing, matrix stimulation, cavity completions, waste/cuttings injection, rock mechanics, and scale prevention/removal. In addition, he has considerable experience in cementing, sand management, conformance control, perforating strategy, and formation damage. Formerly, he was with ConocoPhillips, Arco, and Dowell Schlumberger. He also served as a special member of the petroleum engineering graduate faculty at the University of Oklahoma, Norman, USA, and received the 2007 SPE Drilling and Completions Award.

Great Textbook with Applicable Examples

This is a very easy to follow book and really helped me to better understand Hydraulic Fracturing. If you go to the website for the publisher, there are examples and formatted spreadsheet that accompany this textbook. I found those really helpful! It is easy to read and take noted in the Kindle Format. I love that Kindle will allow you to sync and read on any device that you would like. I listed to the text while driving and looked and all the examples and figures on my tablet. Everything was formatted perfectly for electronic viewing. I have worked in Oil & Gas for 6 years and wanted to better understand the fracturing process and designs. This book really accomplished that and helped me to get there. There are basic to advanced concepts in this book. It also covers the history of fracturing wells. I finished going through this material in ~2 months. I am a fast reader, but I think this book would be helpful to anyone that is beginning this topic to the intermediate level.

Wonderfully written fantastical children's book about what millions of kids dream about--a flying car!

My 4 and 7 year old boys and I love this book (and the 4-year-old just turned 4, so he was loving it as a 3-year-old too)! We are only half-way through it, but when I ordered it, I was hoping that it would deliver, and it has! I had never read anything by Ian Fleming before, but I was happy to see he has that wonderful narrative voice, similar to the Naria and Pooh books (as in, something like, my words, not his- "Now, you might be wondering how a car could make her thoughts known. Well, if you think about it, if you really set your mind to figuring it out, then you might..."...etc etc. --talking right to the reader as though the narrator and I know each other). He has the very long sentences (reminded me of Pooh also a bit), with fabulous punctuation (either his or the publisher's). So all of this makes it fun for me to read, in this delightful fantastical style. But then, you talk about a flying car, and bad guys, and guns, and a skeleton--my boys love it! A movie mentioning those things might scare them, but a book is manageable.

It's not a non-stop action packed book, just note that. There are a few pictures, but not a lot. My boys have been sitting for long books since they were very young and we're blessed that they have patience for it, but I definitely speed up in parts and try out voices, read to them outside, etc. to keep it moving. Really, you could sum up the action pretty quickly, but the book is really a lot more than the action anyway. It's entering the world of these characters, getting to know them, journeying with them, and getting to watch a car turn into a boat or fly or make snide remarks through the dashboard! And it's great for the young children to create their own pictures in their heads. There are a few books after this first one, and my kids already are excited about reading those. And they ask me to read Chitty Chitty every day. I look forward to showing them the movie at some point too, so they can compare.

Daughter loves

This was my daughter's first taste of a book vs a movie. She is only 10 and had never read a book after seeing the movie first. She kept asking why the book was different from the movie. While she prefers the movie, I am sure in time she will see how books and movie differ most of the time and that as in most situations this book is indeed better than the movie.
