There were some useful tips and ideas

Its OK. Not a barn burner. There were some useful tips and ideas. I'd purchase it again, but I don't think it would help payers of Civilization who are more accomplished at playing the game.

Low on content and cheap to boot!

I'll agree with other reviewers that the content doesn't provide much supplemental information, but I confess a preference for hard copy documentation when I'm using software. It's the booklover in me, plus the fact that I like to look at the manual and the game I'm playing at the same time.

My complaint with this book is that it is cheaply produced and difficult to read. I've grown used to the 4-color Prima guides. They are excelently laid out and easy on the eye. The Civ IV guide, however, is B&W and the font size is 9 at best. Unless you have great vision, you'll find yorself wanting to use a magnifier. It's fascinating. The Prima Sims2 Nightlife manual has 224 pages, all 4-color, and is a pleasure to read. The Brady Civ IV manual has 188 B&W pages and is a complete pain to peruse. Both have list prices of $19.99. One guess which company is delivering the best value.

A Dissenting Point of View

After reading all the pans of this book, I thought I would put in a dissenting point of view. I am completely new to the Civilization series and need all the help I can get. I think generally the book is doing a good job getting me up to speed. I do agree, though, that the drawbacks of the book are significant and make the book frustrating to use.

First, what works about the book:

* covers basic strategies

* reproduces tech tree and unit descriptions

* gives strategy and tactical advice for each unit and resource

* includes tips from the game testers

* doesn't assume reader is familiar with previous games in the series

* is good for people (like me) who don't want to read the Civilopedia online any more than they have to

What doesn't work about the book:

* text is too small! Much of the joy of reading the book is squandered by having to squint -- and I don't wear glasses.

* no index. Publishers that release books with no indexes might be trying to save money, but they really reduce the book's usability

* screenshots are so small (some are 1.5" x 1.25" -- what were they thinking?) and are in black and white, so they are mostly too frustrating to bother trying to understand. Whoever tried to save money by printing in 9 point text made the same decision with the screenshots.

* screenshots have no caption beneath them. What is the screenshot attempting to demonstrate? Text only sometimes can be counted on to refer to the screenshot. The combination of smallness, lack of color and no captions makes the screenshots mostly useless to this reader. Pretty quickly I learned that they add no value to the book.

Final assessment: I paid a grand total of $13 for the book and definitely am getting my money's worth. The thing is that, given the option, I would have gladly paid $20 for the above drawbacks to be rectified.

About the Author

Karen Martin is president of The Karen Martin Group, Inc., a firm that specializes in business performance improvement and Lean management practices. She's also the author of the Shingo Research Award–winning The Outstanding Organization, an instructor in the University of California, San Diego's Lean Enterprise program, and an industry advisor to the University of San Diego's Industrial and Systems Engineering program.

Mike Osterling provides support and leadership to organizations on their Lean transformation journey. Prior to consulting, Mike played a key internal role in Schneider Electric's Lean transformation during the 1990s. He is the cofounder of San Diego State University's Lean Enterprise program and continues to teach at SDSU and other universities.

Using Value Stream Mapping to get real results

Back in the late 1990′s the book “Learning to See” revolutionized my professional life. With lightening clarity I understood what lean flow was about, how I could learn to see the flow, and then make the flow better through kaizen. Working with Bruce Baggaley, (and help from numerous generous people) we set about “Learning to Count” by radically simplifying manufacturing cost accounting around value streams. These were exciting and creative times.

Now 13 or 14 years later, value stream mapping is everywhere. Everyone talks about value stream mapping. Almost every company I visit shows me their maps. This method has become a standard “lean tool”. Value stream mapping is a great success But …..

When you look a little closer you find this success is not so good as you think. There are many companies that have value stream maps on the wall that have no valid data. It’s common to be shown a current state map with no future state. Or you find a value stream map that addresses just a small part of the flow – totally missing the point. Other times I find beautiful looking diagrams created by powerful MapO’Matic software, but the maps are hidden inside computer systems and not really used for anything; and life goes on without any real vision for flow.

Like most good things, value stream mapping has been watered down and rendered impotent.

Karen Martin and Mike Osterling have written an excellent book that shows you step-by-step how to do value stream mapping and do it right. In their short and readable *”Value Stream Mapping”* book Martin and Osterling have laid out the authentic way to map value streams.

The book starts with defining what value streams are and why we need to map them. Then it takes us through the steps required to create a current state map, develop a vision for future excellence, and then how to map what that future will look like. Most importantly, the authors clearly show how we can create a practical action plan to achieve the lean changes we need to make.

If you follow this book, you will be using value stream maps the right way. The way that gets you the profoundly radical change required to better serve your customers and create unprecedented profits and agility.

The added bonus that sets this book apart is that the authors focus on processes in a wide range of industries and professions. You won’t feel like the maps work in factories but not in my office. Chances are your kind of processes are included in the examples.

Valuable addition the the Lean and VSM literature

How does Value Stream Mapping by Karen Martin & Mike Osterling joins the ranks of the best books on mapping and transforming value streams (material and information flow processes across the enterprise). The book differs from others in that it does not focus on the mechanics of value stream mapping itself. Instead the emphasis is on physical, social and logistical preparation around mapping a value stream. For the expert in value stream mapping, this book provides useful advice on how to embed VSM within the management of an overall change effort. For an experienced change leader without background in VSM, this book provides a good overview of its what and why. For the leader who is new to the above, the book provides guideposts for empowering the rest of the organization to take a stab at value stream mapping.

The six examples of current and future state value stream maps included in the Appendices, drawn from the authors' real experience in across business environments as various as Outpatient Imaging Services, Purchasing, Repair Services, Shelving Systems and Software Development, are a valuable addition to the literature.

Much of the "how" in this book surrounds activities peripheral but important to the mapping itself, such as setting the stage, laying the groundwork, defining the charter, forming the team, "socializing" or communicating the charter, and similarly organizing to implement the transformation plan after mapping. For the actual mapping activity itself, useful explanation is provided on conducting value stream walks, filling out data boxes and asking probing questions about the current and future state.

This book will turn many more people on to the power of value stream mapping and give people the courage and confidence to know that there is a way through the confusion and waste of everyday processes.

Value-Add in Value Stream Mapping

In Learning to See by Shook and Rother, I learned how to illustrate a manufacturing process or value stream to illuminate the waste in that process. Keyte and Locher helped me refine the tool and apply it to non-manufacturing environments in The Complete Lean Enterprise: Value Stream Mapping for Administrative and Office Processes. Armed with these basics, I've led many mapping events, and being honest, some were successful while others were not.

Value Stream Mapping by Karen Martin & Mike Osterling is the missing piece that will help me go from how-to-map to how-to-be-more-successful in helping with the continuous improvement efforts in my organization. Learning how to have conversations with upper management, using value stream maps as the vehicle for strategic talks, was an aha moment for me and something I hadn't found in other books.

I would recommend this book to all change-agents, and all mappers (beginners and experienced). For those organizations that have the wall-decorating, unused value stream maps gathering dust, this book will help put the value-add back in value stream mapping.

The primary objective is to assist those who conduct research on archeological skeletal remains in interpreting abnormal conditions that they might encounter in the course of their research. However, there is much that ancient skeletal remains can reveal to the modern orthopedist, pathologist, forensic anthropologist, and radiologist about the skeletal manifestations of diseases that are rarely encountered in modern medical practice. The medical historian will find information on the antiquity and early geographical distribution of many diseases. All of the major categories of disease that affect bone are reviewed on the basis of the literature on the radiology and pathology of these diseases. This review is followed by a discussion of the literature on the paleopathological cases thought to represent each of the morbid categories affecting bone. This book is based on extensive individual and collaborative research by the author and contributing authors on the known parameters of basic calcified tissue biology and modern skeletal diseases and their expression in antiquity. This book is the Bible of Paleopathology. I have the first edition of this book and it has been indispensible to me since I first bought it years ago. Any serious skeletal biology or human osteology student should own a copy of this book.

Most Comprehensive Ever

I think that the thing I found most helpful about this book, is that the illustrations show normal articulation and then have the traumatized area together for easier comparisons. This book covers everything from cellular biology to disease pathology and histology. It's worth the money to have this book as a resource in your library.

Although in general this is a great text on paleopathology, some pictures depict the wrong pathology being described. Hopefully this will be corrected in later editions.

About the Author
Ian Lancaster Fleming was a British journalist, naval intelligence officer, and creator of the fictional British spy, James Bond. As personal assistant to the director, Fleming excelled, and his wartime service provided ample background for his later Bond stories.

Fleming s Bond novels and short-story collections are among the best-selling books of all time, and serve as the basis for the highly-successful movie franchise, which has starred such acclaimed actors as Sean Connery, Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig as James Bond. In addition to the Bond series, Fleming wrote the children s classic Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang: The Magical Car. He died in 1964 of heart disease.

A very useful introduction to the use of spectroscopy in elucidating the structures of organic compounds

This is a great book for someone like me who studied post-grad chemistry in the 1970s when nmr spectroscopy was in its infancy and who wants to bone up on the basics of some of the more modern analytical techniques used to elucidate the structures of organic molecules. It is probably a good reference for modern post-grads as well as practising organic chemists who want a quick reference that will tell them the mid-IR absorption bands associated with most functional groups and the chemical shifts of protons and C13 nuclei in many chemical environments.

About the Author
Iris Gattegno Tarbuk has the gift of seeing and communicating with energies and beings in the otherworld an "reading" persons and their souls. She will say she is a soul reader, she can see souls and reads people like books. In Israel, where she was born, she graduated on the Israeli College for Alternative Medicine and started working especially in the field of counseling people with emotional and psychological problem, using also the Bach flower therapy. During the past thirty years of working on herself, she has further developed her natural talent and today she can recommend people which course to take in order to put in motion their own energy with which they will overcome difficulties and remove blockages. She has been living in Zagreb since 1995 and has led several workshops titled "Developing intuition" where she taught how to develop attention for the invisible world around us. A MUST read!

Are you looking for the one? That one person who seems to know you better than you know yourself? That one person who seems to make time stop? Your other half, your soul mate! If so, then this is a MUST READ for you!! Iris Gatteegno Tarbuk has written this fantastic guide to finding that one person, and not only finding them but, building a lifetime relationship with them. Iris is a well-known spiritual medium and guide. She explains to the reader, the love which only a medium can see both in the known and the other world, in the eternal journey of searching for and finding soul mates. She speaks of happy and unhappy, long and short destinies and contacts of lovers and their carnal union with energies exchange through sex, which is the most powerful magic existing in the universe. Now I am one of the lucky ones for I have already from my soul mate, but I did find this extremely beneficial to apply to our relationship and bring us even closer. If you're looking for the one, or maybe you already have, either way this is a MUST read!

True love.

Everyone should be looking for the kind of love described in this book. I personally loved how this book defined what love is and explained how to find it; the book was overall very engaging and well-written. As someone who is (somewhat) contently single, it was a great reminder that somewhere out there is the right person for me.

I liked how Tarbuk talked about keeping true love, and he did a good job of making complex things easy to understand. Overall, I found this book inspiring and I think it's relatable to anyone regardless of what relationship stage they are in. It's well worth the read.

Tragic Hope

This is the story of Faina, a young girl sent to live with her mother and sister, neither of whom she has ever known, while her father takes a job on an Alaskan rig to pay off gambling debts.
Faina starts off charmingly naiive, but is quickly immersed into the tragic world in which her sister and mother live. In different ways she becomes a magnet of salvation for both mother and sister, both of whom seek redemption and freedom from the choices of their past. It is truly a compelling read -- a simple story of a girl suddenly thrust into a highly unstable environment. There is not a hint of fakeness to the book. You almost want to reach out and wipe Faina's tears away with a Kleenex.
This is not at all the type of book that I usually read, but I would highly recommend it.

a real coming of age story

Where No Gods Came is a true coming of age story: the brave Faina McCoy navigates the dangerous waters of the adult world with all the spunk, know-how, and hope she has in her heart. O'Connor's vivid prose lets us deeply into each character as the story slowly winds/unwinds through the year. A must read book.

A treasure of a book. O'Connor masterfully depicts the coming of age of young Faina McCoy -- at once tough and fragile.
No detail is wasted. No emotion goes untested.
O'Connor's tale of a youth exposed to the fallout of the her damaged family's reckless life choices, keeps you on the edge of your seat, fervently hoping that Faina will emerge with a happy ending to her story.
O'Connor's attention to detail allows us to immediately identify and sympathize with Faina. The author deftly depicts the cruelty of throwaway comments by those around Faina, the pressures of wanting to fit it with other preteens and having to shoulder (literally) the frailties and flaws of the family that makes it impossible to fit in anywhere. And she does so with gut-felt truthfulness and gritty accuracy.
Don't miss this wonderful novel.

Awesome book - recommend for every J2EE programmers

This is the best Servlet/JSP book I have read - I read so many other books but no other book duplicates the coverage and depth of this book.
I passed the test using this book but I am happier about finding this little treasure. Currently, I am converting WebSphere to WebLogic application and I'm keeping this book right besides me. I'm refactoring this old legacy code and converting to the latest standard.
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn servlet and JSP. It may be not for the beginners but definitely you need to have a copy of it if you are serious about servlet/JSP.

The only book needed for SCWCD

I strongly recommend this book to any SCWCD aspirant. This is the only book you need to pass the test smoothly and score admirably. The language of the book is easy to follow; the topic covers adequately the test requirement. This book was written based on Tomcat 4.0 specification. As a result, the sample code on the appendix CD couldn't work with the current Tomcat 4.1.* without minor changes. If you buy this book, you do need to download the latest sample code.... This will save you lots of troubles in learning. .... In spite of the above shortcomings, I still give this book a five star.

This is all you need...

In my opinion this is all you'll ever need to pass the SCWCD exam. I only read this book and used JWebPlus (included in the CD) and I passed the exam with flying colors. The author has a very easy and deliberate approach in explaining the critical concepts covered on the test. The layout of the book is superb and thorough as well. After reading this book, I didn't need to look at a single API or spec; I just used the Quick Study guide (in the back of the book) and then went a passed the test. Excellent job.
