Five stars for clarity. Jay explains his points by telling stories from past events that impacted the world.

Five stars for practical wisdom. By reading this book, I notice that there's a pattern for success - change. If you can see what need to be changed in an industry or community and act to execute your idea, you might have a high rating for success.

Five stars for guiding me to the future. Jay does not only tells stories from the past, he connects the dots in the past to predict the future.

Excellent book. I'll read it again.

I have never read a book PACKED WITH SO MANY GEMS!!! I highlighted 323 passages in the book along with making 52 notes. Jay's book is transformative. Alan Kay said "point of view is worth 80 IQ points". Disrupt You will definitely change your point of view in many dimensions. Additionally it provides many frameworks with examples that can help guide you on your new quest. A true love story

It would make a beautiful family movie, one where you will smile through your tears at the ending. The story will draw you in so you actually feel like one of the characters. It will leave you with a warm, loving feeling, and perhaps a longing that your family and friends could be more like this one.

Love Is In The Air

Sometimes it takes an unhappy event to make families and friends look at things in a different light. This is exactly what happens when Russell Gunn passes away and Darby is responsible for carrying out her best friends last wishes.

Although things did not go as Russell had wanted due to Bella Gunns involvement (his step mother) we see that even thru errors in judgement things can turn out for the better.

Darby and Ben become more then just the childhood friends they were when he returns for his brothers funeral and the wonderful Lane sisters who have helped to raise the Gunn children become more involved in helping to free a family member who has been trapped for way to long. (Way to go Harriet, Lydia and Vivian)

Of course along the way we find secrets and love when we might least expect it and once again Ms Michaels shows us it is never to late to love and forgive. This story is wonderful and the characters are so real we just feel like we know them personally.

Sobriety and moderation are alien concepts to the men in Dimmy's family. Within hours of his son's birth, Pierre plucks him from the maternity ward, props him on his bike, and takes him on an introductory tour of the village bars. His mother soon leaves them to it and as Dimmy grows up amid the stench of stale beer, he seems destined to follow the path of his forebears and make a low-life career in inebriation, until he begins to piece together his own plan for the future.

In this semi-autobiographical novel from Verhulst (Madame Verona Comes Down the Hill), the tattered family of narrator Dmitri, or Dimmy, lurches through life, frequently drunk and often disorderly. Dimmy, his uncles, and his father live in Arsendegem, Belgium, in a state of squalor about which nobody cares overmuch: We were ashamed, but we didn't do anything about it.... A miserable existence doesn't have to be complicated. The book itself is uncomplicated. Dimmy wryly relates stories, mostly from his youth, of his relatives' alcoholic hijinks: getting a cousin drunk for the first time; gambling to pay off gambling debts; a drinking contest/bicycle race modeled, improbably, after the Tour de France, in which vomiting wasn't against the rules: the puked-up beer would not be deducted from the total. Verhulst doesn't shrink from portraying Dimmy in a bad light, as when he describes waiting for his child to be born: There was still a very slim chance of the child being stillborn.... In that case I would find it difficult to conceal my delight. This bitingly honest book tips toward the amusing as fiction and toward the dismaying as autobiography. (Oct.)

The grotesque nature of chronic drinking is played as absurdist comedy in Verhulst's book. Admittedly autobiographical, Verhulst's rendering of pub life and the liver-crushing, free-wheeling lifestyle that has long-term effects on the narrator recalls nothing so much as the bittersweet flavor of Charles Bukowski and, by extension, Tom Waits. There's something of a meditation on fatherhood; the patriarch of the family takes his son on a tour of the bars immediately after his birth. But unfortunately, the novel's women become mere afterthoughts to the sport of the day. Drinking, as the narrator Dimmy explains, becomes something of a contest. "God created the day and we dragged ourselves through it," Verhulst writes. "When we still lived like characters in the songs of Big Bill Broonzy, Omer organized an assault on the world drinking record." And the men, be it Dimmy's father or his extended family of uncles, are rather disgusting: sweating, farting, scratching, cursing behemoths for whom beer and the consumption of said is a religion. The novel's pinnacle comes in the form of "The Tour de France," a monumental tribute to the pub crawl, replete with the contestants speeding through the suburbs in their underwear. Verhulst wraps things up nicely as Dimitri outgrows his roots. "I'm not one of them, but I'd like to be," he says. First, is this a memoir, or fiction? The Misfortunates begins with the following disclaimer, which clears things right up: "Any similarity between existing people and certain characters in this book is due solely to insight into human nature."
In any case, this moving story about a "lower lower working class" family (grandmother, several sons, grandson) living in (fictional) Arsendegem, Flanders (Belgium), plagued by alcoholism, essentially defined by alcoholism, is so full of insight into human nature, and love, and dryly humorous observations, it is difficult to know where to begin. Here is a representative slice: "My grandmother emerged from the kitchen with a bucket and a rag, just the way a commemorative statue would represent her." The bouts and binges and day-to-day drinking are of a truly monumental proportion, and provide scenes both horrifying and humorous, including a Tour de France of alcohol consumption no mortal could survive.
Beyond alcoholism, there is the theme of social class, and the internal struggles that occur for those who, like the author, "rise above" a deprived and depraved family populated by those deeply flawed humans who you love so deeply. You can no longer be with this family, but you are undeniably of this family. "Girder will invariably call me his little brother--and there's not much that can make me happier than having this villainous pig call me his little brother."
This uncomfortable status of the writer who has emerged from family misfortune (and worse) reminded me of Rick Bragg's "All over but the shouting" and, especially, Tobias Wolff's "This boy's life" along with his later memoir/novels "Old school" and "In pharaoh's army." I would rank Verhulst (through David Colmer's masterful translation) as a writer and storyteller on par with Wolff, whose books I greatly admire.I hope, like Wolff, Verhulst will write the story of the next part of his life, that of his intellectual emergence from misfortune through fosterage.
Bottom line: this is a deceptively powerful story that suggests more understanding of what is true about people and important in life than is fair for a youngish middle-aged writer like Dimitri Verhulst to command. I can only hope that he keeps the books (and translations) coming. Very highly recommended.

*I received this ARC copy through goodreads first reads*
Dimmy is young when his mother leaves and his father moves them in with his grandmother and three uncles. Sobriety is a bad word in their house and Dimmy has to navigate his adolescent years among unapologetic alcoholics and chaotic relationships. It is expected for Dimmy to follow in their footsteps but life could always pass on an opportunity if he's willing to take it.
As someone who has seen loved ones battle the disease of alcoholism this novel felt familiar in some ways. A lot of readers will be able to relate on some level which makes this a subject that will never get worn out. I almost felt guilty for liking some of the characters or finding their antics funny, but comedy can help swallow a bitter pill as long as the importance is not pushed aside. I am not going to get too wordy because this is novel is really about personal taste more so than some. I will recommend this one but I will say that if you cannot read comic antics along with alcoholism it might not be the right fit. The author in no way diminishes alcoholism in my opinion.

Beer-swilling Flemings on the Road of Salvation.

Dimitri Verhulst takes off from where Louis Paul Boon , the often Nobel-prize nominated, socially conscious chronicler of the industrial revolution in Flanders left it. The former sixteen hours a day textile workers or Feet Warming marauders are now lowly employed or social benefit receiving drunkards who try to make the best out of a life with little promises, but in which beer is a comforting constant.
It would all be quite depressing where it not for the writer's ability to put a humorous slant on things, something he also shares with his illustrious predecessor Boon.
There's another excellent Verhulst book translated into English: Problemski Hotel.

This book shows the support of Spiritism by the Spirit world

I had read several of the books by the spirit Andre Luiz, as transmitted to by Francisco Xavier, each one explores further into the workings of the Spirit world. This book starts out with Andre Luiz going to a lecture given to Spiritists who a still in their body. The lecture is given to them while they sleep. In Spiritism, it is revealed that while we sleep our spirits are free to roam. In fact, we here on earth are reborn many times, with the aim of improving ourselves to become better spirits. We all have an immortal soul, that travels through many lifetimes. When we commit a bad deed, we pay for it in the next lifetime. All part of a plan to teach us to become better, to learn to treat others as we want to be treated and to believe that all humans are part of one family and deserve our help.

This book goes into detail how we are helped by the Spirit world and how they help spirits that have died, but are lost in the netherworld. Those who have not yet accepted responsibility for their own sins. This book explains about our own destiny and why we go through the trials that happen in our lifetime.

Life beyond the death

It is interesting how many people are afraid of the death, notwithstanding this, they don't prepare themselves for this moment. And it is the only certainty in life. This book shows us that the death is not the end, but just a passage and that there are the true love and true life beyond the graves. The evolution is not avoidable and we will face this, so this books helps us to find the shorter path to the true happiness! I really recommend it.

Essential Resource for Learning Jazz Improvisation

Bert Ligon's Connecting Chords with Linear Harmony is an essential resource for learning jazz improvisation. While the book is introductory and self-contained, those without some background in elementary jazz theory (major and minor scales, seventh chords, ii-V-I progressions in major and minor) will probably struggle a bit with the material.

Ligon's book ties together three main elements: 1) three elementary melodic "outlines" for navigating the ii-V-I progression, 2) common melodic "embellishing devices" (passing tones, approach tones, encircling tones, and so on) that can be applied to the outlines to transform them into "real music," and 3) about 250 transcribed phrases from the recordings of Clifford Brown, Charlie Parker, Tom Harrell and others that illustrate this process in the hands of master improvisers.

For many jazz neophytes who have struggled with the more common chord/scale pedagogical approach ("dorian for two beats, mixolydian for two beats, major for four beats"), a little effort with the material here will prove revelatory. The reason may seem a bit counter-intuitive - the "constraint" of embellishing a simple melodic outline provides a starting structure for creating solid jazz lines that is sorely lacking in the chord-scale approach. If this seems a bit mysterious, go to Ligon's USC main faculty web page, click on the jazz improvisation hyperlink, and spend some time digging around in the online materials. The material is poorly organized, but if you can find the "outlines" discussion it will give you a good sense of the contents of this book.

While the material here will keep most busy for a long while, this approach is intended as an entryway to the world of jazz improvisation. There is of course much more in that universe, and Ligon's three other volumes - see my comment to this review for direct links - are excellent resources for expanding one's exploration.

I would like to address a couple of criticisms of this book in other reviews.

Some reviewers criticize the use of short phrases from transcribed solos rather than longer examples. I disagree. The short phrases are entirely appropriate to illustrate the concepts in an introductory manual such as this. As one begins to master Ligon's material, it is very instructive to search complete transcriptions for the presence of embellished outlines. I agree that it would be wonderful to have references to the sources of the transcribed phrases.

One reviewer goes on at great length about example 3 on page 18. Ligon misjudged the placement of this example as it introduces a more advanced concept while the reader is still becoming familiar with the basic ideas. Worse, it has at least two typos, which render it a muddled mess. Example 5 on the next page is essentially the same example. I suggest skipping them on a first reading. To correct the typos: assuming the iii - V7/ii progression and key of F major are correct, the Am7(b5) in both examples should be Am7 and the B in example 3 should be Bb.

Finally, some reviewers have criticized the limited applicability of the basic ideas presented here. Short ii-V7-I examples dominate the book, but far from exclusively so. The application of Outline 1 to other progressions is discussed briefly on pages 28-30, modal applications are discussed briefly in Chapter 8, and pages 94-128 discuss lengthier progressions in detail.

Great Starting Place

Connecting Chords with Linear Harmony has been a huge help for me in taking the first steps towards understanding improvisation and outlining chord changes.

The book is based on three "outlines" used to outline ii-V-I progressions with proper voice leading (7ths leading to 3rds, 9ths leading to 5ths, etc). The outlines concept and embellishments are very clearly explained in the first few pages. From there, the first half of the book gives example after example of famous players' licks, categorizing them by outline and explaining what devices they are using to embellish the outline. Jazz is a language, and I feel like the first half of the book shows you the written form and a bit about grammar and how statements are made.

From chapter 9 on, clear exercises are given to actually get the concept and licks into your improvisation. If this book were a language course, this would be the spoken part. Ligon shows how the outlines work over key changes, turnarounds, blues, Rhythm changes, and tunes like "Stella By Starlight", "All the Things You Are", and even "Giant Steps". At the end of the book, there are etudes and example solos (a Lou Donaldson solo and a Tom Harrell solo) to show the outlines in action. There are also two pages on exercises for teaching the concepts in a jazz improvisation class.

I feel that all of the concepts in the book are clearly explained. This is not a book of basic chord/scale knowledge with a bunch of licks to learn. Ligon does offer hundreds of great licks to learn and use, but the book teaches you to identify and understand the different ways you can outline chord changes. The book is also not a rigid guide of rules and regulations; you begin with the simple outlines, but end with the general understanding of how one chord connects to the next. A thorough understanding of the material presented here would surely give a player a good starting point- a wealth of licks and the understanding of how licks are built and embellished.

Meaningful connection

Learning to improvise and expanding the spontaneous musical vocabulary beyond licks, and half hearted dying phrases have proved to be a quite challenge throughout the years. The the shelves in my bookcase are stacked with abandoned books on the topic. Some of them have become monuments to years of frustration and lack of development. So it would be fair to say that I received Bert Ligon's Connencting Chords with Linear Harmony with somewhat low expectations on what I would gain from working with it.

Surely, I was in for a surprise. With it's simple devices and vast amount of examples from the great legends of jazz, I soon found myself playing over chord progressions, and actually connecting the dots. It was a rewarding experience. No more pages on pages with arpeggios exercises, scales, modes and such. Like the ones that would take months to actually play. I'm not trying to advocate that these things don't matter. Of course they do. In fact I'm also working my way through Mickey Baker's Complete Course in Jazz Guitar: Book 2 (Ashley Publications) too and Creative Guitar 1: Cutting Edge Tech (v. 1), both excellent book, which are full of the above. But still, my point being -though there is a great amount of books that will improve your technique and/or give you great theoretic insight. But when it comes the mysterious craft of sculpting great solo lines, how to understand them and the sacred art of internalizing of them, while having lots of fun, there are only a few "hidden gems" (books) out there. Connecting Chords With Linear Harmony" is certainly one of them.

So now I'm looking forward to the day I clear out that particular shelf in my bookcase, to make room for this book, a monument to progression and achievement. On the other hand, that day may never come. I'm afraid this book is too exciting, practical and too awarding to just stand up there collecting dust. Bert Ligon's book should really have been glued to every music stand ever produced.
