The Cure at Troy yields a measured dose

Seamus Heaney's version of trials for the Greek archer entrusted with Hercules' infallible bow and arrows gives us affirmation and points of reflection. Heaney does not dash the ancient dialogue style on the rocky island; rather it is enriched for the modern reader. Honoring the timelessness of Sophocles, Heaney allows today's reader to make comparisons of private nature and choices with the public need and will. The hero, Achilles' son, Neoptolemus, finds that the strategy to take Troy for the Greeks runs counter to his nature of honesty and integrity. We wrestle with him over the choices. We tumble with him when he loses his grip. We crawl back to sure footing along side the hero. I found myself understanding the characters based on different experiences in my life. Philoctetes bemoans his ill-fated injury which leaves him abandoned and full of vengeance. Human empathy allows him to examine his tight grip on his woundedness without denying what he has endured. Odysseus, the pragmatic lieutenant of war, is shown for his utility and foibles. As in all Greek plays, the chorus calls the characters and the reader to reflection, "...For my part is the chorus, and the chorus is more or less a borderline between the you and the me and the it of it." Heaney got the "it of it" for us to take our own measure.

Good reference

This is a good reference for the C# developers who want to get a good overview of the C# framework and architecture.

Every time I read a book like this, I ask myself "will this book improve my programming skills and understanding?"

I am certain this book will improve programming understanding for everyone. Yet, I am not sure if it will really improve programming skills. The book has no programming exercises that helps the reader to inculcate the knowledge contained in this book into a solid learning experience.

Furthermore, the book doesn't get too much into algorithms. I can't say this is the best C# book I have ever read. But I can still recommend this book based on high quality writing and knowledge about practical C# programming explanations.

Pros:
1)Good explanations of C# framework and architecture.
2)Short and succinct.
3)Good programmatic examples.

Cons:
1)No programming exercises.
2)Very light on programmatic algorithms.

An outstanding work of scholarship in Renaissance portraits

Even if you have read other books on Renaissance painting you are bound to lean a lot by reading this one. This is a very academic overview of the paintings of Medici women in Florence during the reign of Cosimo 1st. The centrepiece portraits are those done by Bronzino with the portrait of Duchess Eleonora and her son Giovanni given a whole chapter to itself.

The author brings an impressive depth of scholarship to this book - and outlines the social and intellectual expectations that are encoded within these somewhat seemingly simple portraits. There are layers of meaning in these paintings - even the most simple looking - that would have been read by contemporary viewers but have been lost to modern viewers as society has changed.

Half this book is references and the author has extensively footnoted her sources. These a selection of colour images at the front of the book of the central portraits discussed and sections of black and white images of other portraits that are used on a comparison basis. This is not a picture book as such, but you'll learn a lot by reading it and the paintings in the colour section will quite literally come alive for you after you have read their subjects backgrounds and meanings painted within them. This book is highly recommended if you want an in-depth understanding of Florentine women's portraits in the 16th century, but it will be a disappointment if you are looking for a large selection of colour images of Medici women.

An exquisite and erudite study

This magnificent book displays the best of the art history AND history being written today. Gabrielle Langdon's years of research and writing have paid off in a study that offers new evidence about one of the most significant periods of Florentine history (the sixteenth century) and about one of its most fabled dynasties, the Medici. She furnishes well-researched accounts of the major artists working in Florence at the time, and she demonstrates a breath-taking command of the ample theoretical material on topics such as iconography, artistic restoration, gender studies, and issues of race in history.
Langdon has been instrumental in uncovering the importance of Alessandro de' Medici and his progeny for Florentine history, as his brief reign as Duke of Florence has not been scrutinized sufficiently by modern historians. Alessandro's African (or "moorish") ancestry is a crucial aspect of Langdon's study, and it is refreshing to see this topic dealt with in a sensitive manner. Together with some forthcoming research by Professor John Brackett on Alessandro, we will soon have a better picture of a complex, violent, and crucial phase of European history.
A final comment: Langdon is a scrupulous researcher, whose copious notes demonstrate her command of the literature of this period, but she is also a gracious scholar, who pays tribute to the work of others and presents differences of opinion in an even-handed and non-acrimonious manner.
This is one of the best books I have read in the last ten years.

Excellent, Readable! Like Physics ought to be!

The text is lucid in its presentation of what is often viewed as a difficult subject.
Starting with no more than a sound understanding of sixth form (high school) Mathematics and Physics, the authors proceed to underpin elementary concepts of electrostatics, simple circuits, and magnetism with the rigour and completeness demanded at University level. New mathematical ideas are introduced gently (so naturally, in fact, that the reader does not feel that (s)he is being asked to learn some new things!) and blended into the key Physical concepts.
The book accelerates through a whole lot of material and tacitly introduces the reader to Maxwell's Equations without calling them so. Only after all of the core physical concepts - Dielectrics, Steady Currents and Magnetic Fields, Ferromagnetism, Electromagnetism/Induction - have been covered, do the authors venture to integrate the mathematics into Maxwell's equations. This emphasis on the Physics (with the Mathematics working merely as a tool) works really well and is central to the readability of this book.
The latter chapters explore Transmission Lines, Electromagnetic Waves (which the mathematically inclined texts like to boast about as solutions of Maxwell's Equations), and the beginnings of Relativistic Electrodynamics.
All in all, an excellent, enjoyable book - highly recommended! Makes Physics fun!
Lastly, I might add that I was one of the "guinea pigs" at Manchester who benefited directly from the materials in this book and others in the Manchester Physics Series.

I had to read this book cover to cover for E.M. class and I found it's layout and presentation very well done. Excelent review of magnetostatics, electrostatics, H & D fields, Maxwell's Eqns, etc. In conjuntion with E.M. Fields and Waves by Lorrain, provides all the necessary texts needed for undergradute courses in E.M.

"Doctors prescribe inefficiently. Many conditions, such as hypertension, are inadequately treated whereas others, such as depression, are overtreated. Bearing in mind the plethora of guidelines now available on virtually every sector of medicine, this seems inexcusable. Whether due to ignorance, indolence, or incredulity, many physicians are not implementing the recommendations of 'experts'.

Conscientious clinicians may think that the advice available from the 'experts' does not apply to the patients they see and will want to assess the evidence for themselves, so that their practice will provide the best management for their patients. It is for such people that this book has been written. The writing is excellent and it is embellished by amusing cartoons and witty one-line quotations. The authors have tried, but not completely succeeded, in avoiding statistics. Their extensive personal experience has enabled them to give good examples to illustrate their points, although they also quote widely from the world literature.

They start by emphasizing the importance of evaluating the balance between benefit and harm. Unfortunately, all too often, papers and presentations, as well as pharmaceutical companies, often highlight the benefits of new treatments while saying little about the adverse effects.

The value of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) as the bedrock of evidence-based medicine is unquestionable, but the shortcomings are often ignored-especially by 'experts'. The authors discuss both the strengths and weaknesses of randomized RCTs. The chapter on weaknesses is largely concerned with the inability of RCTs, because of their limited size, to recognize rare side effects. Although referred to later in the book, the unrepresentative nature of those recruited into trials is given insufficient attention. This is a major reason why practising physicians are often sceptical about the results of trials.

Having stressed that RCTs 'rank highly in terms of reliability for evaluating treatments,' one may question the authors' claim that 'at the top of the ranking are meta-analyses of clinical trials'. In fact, as experience has shown, large individual trials may provide more convincing evidence than a meta-analysis.

In later chapters, they consider such important topics as the doubtful value of surrogate endpoints and biochemical markers, and they also discuss whether active controls can be relied upon and whether all drugs in a class are interchangeable. Much attention is paid to the measurement of adverse drug reactions but here, as elsewhere, discussion is focused on practices in the United States, whereas these issues are often better tackled in other countries (where many of their readers will be located).

Overall, this is an excellent book that can be strongly recommended to the target audience which is, as the authors state, ''clinicians and others in the health care field as well as employees in companies manufacturing drugs, devices and other medical products'." (Trials, Volume 9, 2008)

The objective of this book is to make its readers better informed and more critical consumers of clinical research to help them recognize the strengths and the weaknesses of scientific publications. In doing so, the reader will be able to distinguish patient-important and methodologically sound studies from those having limitations in design, conduct and interpretation.

There are no prerequisites for reading this book. The text is basic and has no statistical formulas. Key take-home messages are listed at the end of each chapter. The large number of cartoons has two purposes: First, to make the text easier to read and generate a few laughs and, second, to underscore specific points, sometimes in a provocative way.

Bengt D. Furberg, MD, PhD is board-certified in internal medicine. After spending a decade as medical director in the pharmaceutical industry, he now serves as medical consultant, evaluating the safety and efficacy of pharmaceutical products and medical devices and promoting evidence-based medicine. His brother, Curt D. Furberg, MD, PhD, is Professor in the Division of Public Health Sciences, Wake Forest University School of Medicine, Winston-Salem, NC, USA. After arriving in the United States from Sweden, he worked at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health for 12 years. He is co-author of Fundamentals of Clinical Trials with Lawrence M. Friedman and David L. DeMets. His areas of interest are clinical trials, evidence-based medicine and drug safety. The authors have acquired much of their knowledge about clinical studies through the "trial and error" method. Thus, they have personal experience�with many of the problems they describe.

Should be read by anyone considering...

...investing in biotechnology stocks...biotech stocks represent a minefield for investors...I would estimate at least 75% of biotech stocks are fraudulent in some fashion...in some cases, the fraud is nothing more than a conscious effort to swindle naive investors...in most others, however, it appears to arise out of sheer ignorance -- ignorance of basic scientific principles, ignorance of experimental design and statistics, etc...this ultimately manifests itself in the FDA's rejection of a large majority of phase 3 studies -- often to the dismay and financial distress of investors...the Furbergs' book provides a concise database of knowledge that will equip any reader with tools that will enable them to analyze clinical research...it's clearly written and, although it is somewhat technical, anyone with a high school background in science and math ought to be able to grasp the basic ideas...
